Chapter 12 - The House on Bellweather Road

Voss was transported to a hospital under guard.
Before the ambulance left, he gave Daniel the code to the encrypted files.
The records opened a history more disturbing than Lucas expected.
Mara had discovered that Helena Vale, living under the identity Evelyn Arden, had built a network that specialized in acquiring control of family trusts. Helena used marriages, medical declarations, forged guardianship petitions, and private treatment centers to separate wealthy parents from their children.
Graham Voss had provided legal access.
Dr. Cross created the medical evidence.
Judge Pike approved sealed orders.
Vanessa entered target families through carefully arranged relationships.
The Hale family had not been their first target.
It had simply been the largest.
But Mara was not selected by chance.
She was Helena’s daughter.
According to Voss’s files, Mara learned the truth after Ellie’s birth. She gathered evidence against the network and prepared to give it to federal investigators.
Before she could, her car was forced off the mountain road.
Emergency responders working for Helena reached the vehicle before the official rescue team. Mara was alive but badly injured. She was taken to Ashford under a false name.
The body used to confirm her death belonged to another patient.
Lucas sat in a private hospital room while Voss spoke from the bed.
“What happened after Ashford?” Lucas asked.
“Mara escaped eleven months later.”
“Why didn’t she come home?”
“She believed Helena was watching you.”
“She let me believe she was dead.”
“She believed that was the only way to keep Ellie alive.”
Lucas wanted to reject the explanation, but the evidence showed surveillance on the estate, intercepted messages, and fabricated reports about his mental health.
“Where did Mara go?”
“I don’t know.”
“You said you could take me to her.”
“I said I could take you to the place where she left her final message.”
Lucas’s hands closed into fists.
“You lied to get protection.”
“I lied for thirty years to survive Helena. Tonight, I finally told a smaller lie for the same reason.”
Daniel stood near the door.
“Give us the location.”
Voss described a storage facility beneath an old railway station.
Before they left, Lucas asked one final question.
“Why does the guardianship document transfer Ellie to Mara at midnight?”
“Because Helena needed a legal ghost.”
Voss explained that a court could not transfer custody to Evelyn Arden without exposing her identity. Instead, the forged document declared Mara alive and appointed Helena as Mara’s medical conservator. Once custody transferred to Mara, Helena would exercise control on her behalf.
Vanessa would gain access to Lucas’s household authority.
Helena would gain control over Ellie’s trust.
Lucas would be declared unstable and confined at Ashford.
By sunrise, the entire Hale estate would belong to people using a dead woman’s name.
At the railway station, Daniel opened the underground storage room with Voss’s key.
Inside were boxes of evidence Mara had hidden after escaping Ashford.
There were photographs, account ledgers, recorded conversations, and a list of families targeted by Helena’s network.
On a table sat a small cassette recorder labeled for Lucas.
His hands shook as he pressed play.
Mara’s voice filled the room.
“Lucas, if you are hearing this, then either I failed to return or Helena reached Ellie before I could stop her.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
“I wanted to come home every day,” Mara continued. “But someone inside your family was giving Helena information. Until I learned who it was, returning would have led her directly to our daughter.”
Claire looked at Lucas.
The recording clicked.
Mara spoke again.
“The person helping Helena is not Graham. He is guilty of many things, but he is not the one I feared most.”
A paper fed from the bottom of the recorder.
It contained a single photograph.
Lucas picked it up.
It showed his father, Richard Hale, standing beside Helena outside Ashford Behavioral Center.
The photograph had been taken three years after Mara’s supposed death.

Richard Hale had died the previous winter.
But according to the date printed on the image, the photograph had been taken six days ago.
