Chapter 11 - The Witness Who Came Late

Lucas, Daniel, Claire, and Rebecca left for Bellweather Road while police remained at the estate with Vanessa and Judge Pike.

Ellie stayed with Rosa in a secure room guarded by two officers.

Lucas hated leaving her, but bringing her near an unknown threat was impossible.

Bellweather Road ran through a wooded area thirty miles outside the city. The abandoned house stood beyond a rusted gate, hidden by trees and years of neglect.

Smoke rose behind the roof.

Police vehicles approached without sirens.

Lucas saw flames through a side window.

He ran before Daniel could stop him.

The front door was chained from the outside.

An officer cut it open.

Smoke filled the hallway, but the fire had not yet spread beyond the rear room. Firefighters moved in while Lucas searched the ground floor.

The room from the video was empty.

The chair remained in the center.

Mara’s hospital bracelet lay on the floor.

Rebecca found a hidden door behind a bookcase.

Stone steps led to a basement corridor and a steel exit at the rear of the property.

Someone had taken Mara moments before the police arrived.

Outside, tire tracks crossed the wet soil.

Daniel examined them.

“Two vehicles. One left toward the highway. The other went east through the woods.”

Rebecca looked at the hospital bracelet.

“This isn’t Mara’s.”

Lucas turned.

“How do you know?”

“The date of birth is wrong.”

The name printed on the bracelet was Mara Hale, but the birth date belonged to Vanessa.

The woman in the video had Mara’s voice and hair, but her face had never appeared.

“It was staged,” Claire said.

“Not entirely,” Rebecca replied. “The voice was real.”

Daniel returned to the house and found a speaker hidden beneath the chair.

The recording had been played through it.

Someone wanted Lucas to believe Mara was inside.

A firefighter emerged carrying a metal lockbox recovered from beneath the floorboards.

Inside were documents wrapped in fireproof material.

Mara’s original guardianship letter.

Copies of Ashford payments.

Photographs of Voss meeting Helena Vale.

And a second death certificate.

This one listed Mara Hale as alive under protective medical custody.

At the bottom was a signature from Dr. Adrian Cross.

The certificate was dated two days after the accident.

Lucas read it beneath the flashing emergency lights.

“If this is real, Cross knew she survived.”

Rebecca turned over one of the photographs.

A handwritten address appeared on the back.

Ashford Behavioral Center, private wing, room 17.

Daniel called the officers stationed at Ashford.

No one answered.

Then his radio crackled.

A breathless voice came through.

“Mercer, Ashford is evacuating. Fire alarm. Cross is missing. Several patient records have been destroyed.”

Lucas looked toward the road.

Headlights appeared beyond the trees.

A white van approached slowly and stopped near the gate.

The driver’s door opened.

Graham Voss stepped out with both hands raised.

Blood marked one side of his shirt, but the injury appeared superficial.

“I can take you to Mara,” he said.

Daniel aimed his weapon.

“Get on the ground.”

Voss obeyed.

Lucas moved closer.

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because Helena ordered Vanessa to kill me the moment the wedding failed.”

“Where is Mara?”

Voss looked toward the burning house.

“She escaped Ashford years ago.”

Lucas felt the ground shift beneath him.

“The video was made eight days ago.”

“Her voice was taken from old recordings.”

“Then why does the new death certificate say she survived?”

“Because she did survive.”

Voss lifted his head.

“But the woman you have been searching for is not the woman who left that mountain alive.”
