Chapter 13 - The Custody Hearing
The midnight guardianship hearing proceeded, but not as Helena had planned.
Daniel transferred it from Ashford to an emergency courtroom under federal supervision. Judge Pike was removed and detained. An independent judge reviewed the forged petitions while investigators presented the documents recovered from Bellweather Road and the railway station.
Lucas sat beside Claire.
Ellie remained in a protected room nearby with a child advocate.
Vanessa entered wearing a plain detention uniform instead of her wedding gown.
She looked directly at Lucas.
“You still don’t understand who you married first,” she said.
He did not answer.
The prosecutor presented the vial found in Vanessa’s gown. Laboratory analysis identified a powerful sedative. The concentration could have caused severe harm if administered without medical supervision.
Vanessa claimed it had been planted.
Rosa testified by video about the alterations and Vanessa’s instructions.
The security recording showed Vanessa placing the vial into the dress herself.
Dr. Cross was captured near the state border shortly before the hearing began. He agreed to cooperate after learning Voss had already provided records.
His testimony confirmed that he had falsified medical evaluations for both Mara and Ellie.
He also admitted that the Hale family had funded Ashford’s private wing for years.
“Who authorized those payments?” the judge asked.
Cross hesitated.
“Richard Hale.”
Lucas felt Claire turn toward him.
Richard had always spoken kindly of Mara. He had paid for the funeral, stood beside Lucas through the investigation, and helped raise Ellie during her first year without a mother.
Cross continued.
“Mr. Hale believed Mara intended to expose financial crimes connected to the family trust. He told us she was unstable and had abducted company records.”
“Did he know she survived the accident?”
“Yes.”
“Did he visit her at Ashford?”
“Frequently.”
Lucas remembered his father leaving for unexplained business trips. Each time, he claimed to be visiting a manufacturing site.
The photograph dated six days earlier remained unexplained.
Richard Hale had been buried ten months ago.
The judge reviewed the evidence and dismissed every guardianship petition.
“All parental rights remain solely with Lucas Hale,” she ruled. “No person associated with Ashford Behavioral Center, Voss Legal Holdings, the Arden family, or the Hale family trust may contact Eleanor Hale without court authorization.”
Lucas released a breath he felt he had been holding for weeks.
The judge continued.
“Given the evidence of coordinated fraud, kidnapping, medical abuse, and attempted unlawful confinement, this court refers the matter for full criminal prosecution.”
Vanessa’s composure broke.
She stood.
“You think this protects the girl?”
Officers moved toward her.
She pointed at Lucas.
“Ask him why Richard Hale paid to keep Mara alive instead of killing her.”
Lucas stared at her.
Vanessa smiled through tears.
“Richard wasn’t protecting the trust from Mara. He was protecting Mara from someone else.”
“Who?”
She was led toward the door.
“Your father is alive,” she said. “And he is not your father.”
The courtroom erupted into noise.
Lucas rose, but Daniel stopped him from following.
The judge ordered the room cleared.
Minutes later, the child advocate brought Ellie to Lucas.
She ran into his arms.
“Can we go home now?”
Lucas held her close.
“Yes.”
“Is Vanessa coming?”
“No.”
“Is the wedding over?”
“It’s over.”
Ellie leaned back to study his face.
“Are you sad?”
Lucas thought of the ceremony, the lies, the woman he had almost married, and the life he had nearly handed to strangers.
Then he thought of Ellie locked behind the bathroom door, believing she would stop being his family at midnight.
“No,” he said. “I’m sorry I didn’t listen sooner.”
“You listen now.”
“I always will.”
She linked her little finger with his.
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
As they left the courtroom, Daniel received an urgent message.

The coffin was empty.
