THE EMPTY NURSERY / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - What Thomas Ellison Left Behind)

Claire insisted on visiting her father's grave before they fled.

It made no tactical sense. Whoever photographed the chapel could still be nearby, and Noah had begun to fuss. But the final page of Thomas's audit contained a notation beside the cemetery address: where she learned to count.

Claire knelt at the shared stone bearing her parents' names. Daniel remained twenty feet away with Evelyn, keeping the promise not to approach unless invited.

As a child, Claire had counted the carved leaves around the stone after her grandmother's burial. Her father corrected her when she skipped the smallest leaf near the base.

There were twenty-three leaves.

Today she counted twenty-four.

The new leaf was not a leaf at all. It was a metal tab disguised with gray paint. Claire pressed it. A narrow panel opened in the side of the stone, revealing a waterproof tube.

Inside lay a key, a cassette tape, and a note.

Claire,

If you are reading this, the numbers reached you before I could. Do not let shame make you loyal to a dangerous man. Evidence is not betrayal. Silence is.

The key belonged to a storage unit in Stamford. They went there separately, doubled back twice, and entered through different doors.

Thomas had rented the unit under the name of Claire's childhood dog. Inside were six filing cabinets, an old tape recorder, and a wall covered by a dust sheet.

Claire inserted the cassette.

Her father's voice filled the room, older and wearier than she remembered.

“Conrad created Meridian in 1998 after a hospital investment failed. The original purpose was to compensate families whose neonatal care had been cut to preserve profits. Samuel converted the fund into a private reserve. When Conrad tried to unwind it, Samuel began using children's identities to move the money. Conrad calls them the second family.”

Daniel pulled away the dust sheet.

Seven photographs had been pinned to the wall. Each showed an infant beside a typed financial profile. Six were marked CLOSED. The seventh space was empty.

Claire held Noah tighter.

Thomas's recording continued. “There are six custodial accounts I can prove. A seventh is planned. The Mercer heir is not involved, but Samuel intends to make him involved. If Daniel inherits without learning the truth, his ignorance will become Samuel's strongest asset.”

Daniel stood perfectly still. His father had known enough to fight but not enough to confess. Thomas had known Daniel was being prepared as a shield. Both men died, and Samuel inherited their silence.

The cassette clicked, then resumed.

“Claire, Conrad says he has another family. I do not know whether he means the account holders or something literal. He gave me a phrase to use if I ever need to reach him after the plane.”

After the plane.

Thomas made the recording seven years before Conrad's crash.

“The phrase is: the nursery has no windows.”

The tape ended.

Evelyn opened the cabinets. They contained records for children whose names had been used in shell accounts. All six were alive. Their families had received unexplained settlements and signed confidentiality agreements through Samuel's firm.

“This clears Noah as part of a pattern,” Evelyn said. “It also establishes premeditation.”

“Will it stop the gala plan?” Claire asked.

“Only if the evidence reaches an uncompromised prosecutor.”

Daniel's phone, newly purchased and still sealed, began ringing inside its box.

No one moved.

He opened the packaging and answered on speaker.

Samuel's voice said, “Thomas was sentimental. I told him cemeteries were poor banks.”

Claire felt Daniel move beside her, but she spoke first. “You murdered my father.”

“Your father chose a road he had been warned not to travel.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I preserved a company that feeds twelve thousand families.”

“By attaching stolen money to babies?”

“Adults are investigated. Children are protected. It was an efficient shelter until you married into the structure.”

Daniel stepped closer to the phone. “Call off the gala plan.”

“There is no plan, Daniel. Only documents your unstable wife misunderstood.”

“We have your succession agreement.”

For the first time, Samuel paused.

Claire watched Evelyn start a trace.

“Then bring it to the gala,” Samuel said. “Stand before the board and accuse the man who kept your father's company alive while you entertained yourself in hotel rooms.”

“I will.”

“Good. Bring Claire. Bring the child. Let everyone see what you are willing to risk.”

The call ended before the trace completed.

Evelyn removed the tape from the recorder. “He wants us there badly enough to know we can use it.”

Claire looked at the seven spaces on the wall. “He said children's identities were efficient because children are protected. But someone had to provide their records before the accounts were opened.”

Evelyn checked the hospital data in the files.

Every child, including Noah, had been born at the same private hospital in Greenwich.

And every birth record had been approved by the same nurse.
