Chapter 6 - The Records of a Dead Man)

Mercer headquarters rose above Park Avenue in black glass and limestone. At midnight, the lobby reflected Daniel and Vanessa like two people already trapped inside.

Vanessa used her executive badge. Daniel used his face. Neither told the guards they were entering a building controlled by men who might be waiting for them.

Conrad Mercer's records room occupied the back of the forty-sixth floor. After his death, Daniel had ordered it sealed because he could not bear the smell of his father's cigars. Samuel alone retained archival authority.

The brass key opened a panel hidden behind a bookcase.

Inside, gray boxes filled shelves from floor to ceiling. Conrad had preserved everything: meeting notes, private contracts, photographs, even menus annotated with the names of useful politicians. Vanessa searched the legal indexes while Daniel opened a cabinet marked FAMILY.

His birth certificate lay on top.

Beneath it was a photograph of Conrad at thirty-five, standing beside a woman Daniel did not recognize. She held an infant wrapped in a white blanket. On the back, Conrad had written only M and our first chance.

“Daniel,” Vanessa called.

She had found a binder containing the succession structure. If Daniel were arrested, missing, or deemed incapable, his voting shares would transfer temporarily to Meridian Children's Future. The foundation could then approve an emergency sale of Mercer Development to a private consortium.

The consortium was represented by Samuel Reed.

“He gets the company,” Daniel said.

“For one dollar plus assumed debt. The forty-eight million creates the debt.”

“And Claire and Noah?”

Vanessa turned to the final page. “Their deaths fund the acquisition and remove the only competing beneficiaries.”

Daniel gripped the table until his knuckles whitened. His affair had not created the scheme, but it had given Samuel the perfect lever. His neglect had allowed false signatures to pass. His vanity had taught everyone around him that access could be borrowed as long as profits continued.

He photographed every page and uploaded the images to three destinations. Then he noticed a red folder inside the binder.

It contained surveillance reports on Claire.

Her work history. Medical appointments. Weekly routines. Photographs taken outside her father's house before she and Daniel ever met.

The earliest report was dated twelve years earlier.

Subject possesses auditor's secondary copy. Maintain observation. Marriage pathway acceptable if Mercer heir remains unaware.

Daniel read the sentence again. “Our marriage was a pathway.”

Vanessa leaned over his shoulder. “Samuel knew who Claire was before you met her.”

Daniel and Claire had been introduced at a museum fundraiser nine years ago. Samuel had purchased Daniel's ticket and insisted he attend.

The floor lights went red.

Steel shutters descended over the windows. A calm automated voice announced a fire lockdown, but there was no smoke.

Vanessa tried the door. It had sealed electronically.

“He knows we're here,” she said.

Daniel took the red folder and succession binder. “Is there another exit?”

“Conrad had a private elevator.”

They found it behind a velvet curtain. The call button was dead, but Vanessa pried open the control plate and crossed two wires. Somewhere below, machinery groaned.

While they waited, Daniel opened the last surveillance report. It was dated that morning.

Claire had been photographed nursing Noah beside the nursery window. Beneath the image were five words.

Custodian assigned: Agent E. Hart.

Daniel's phone found enough signal to send one message.

Claire, do not trust Evelyn. She was assigned to you before Noah was born.

The private elevator arrived. Its doors opened on darkness.

Vanessa stepped inside first. Daniel followed, clutching the records against his chest. The elevator dropped two floors and stopped with a violent jolt.

A man's voice came through the emergency speaker.

“Your father always said fear was the only inheritance you would use wisely,” Samuel said.

Daniel looked up at the speaker. “If Claire or Noah is hurt, I will destroy everything you built.”

“You already did that when you married her.”

“Why her?”

May you like

Samuel gave a tired laugh. “You still believe this story began with you.”

The elevator cables released.
