THE EMPTY NURSERY / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Woman in Apartment 38)

Vanessa Cole lived thirty floors above the East River in a building where privacy was included in the rent. Daniel arrived at 9:06, abandoned his car across two spaces, and told the doorman he would break the glass doors if they were not opened.

The elevator deposited him in a silent corridor. Vanessa's apartment door was ajar.

“Vanessa?”

The living room had been searched with professional speed. Sofa cushions were slit. Drawers had been emptied but jewelry remained on the dresser. Two laptops lay smashed in the kitchen sink. Whoever came had not wanted valuables. They wanted information.

Daniel found a dark stain near the broken balcony glass. His heart jumped until he touched it and smelled red wine.

His phone showed no new message from Claire. He typed, Samuel is involved. Tell me where you are. He did not send it. If her device was being watched, warning her could expose her faster.

A floorboard creaked behind him.

Daniel turned. Vanessa stood inside the hall closet, aiming a compact pistol at his chest.

Her silver blouse was torn at one shoulder, and blood marked her lower lip.

“Put your hands where I can see them.”

“It's me.”

“I know.”

The words cut more sharply than the weapon.

Daniel lifted his hands. “Did Samuel send those men?”

“Samuel doesn't send men. He sends instructions, and people who owe him favors obey.” Vanessa lowered the pistol a few inches. “How did you get past the lobby?”

“I used my name.”

“Of course you did. You still think your name opens doors instead of painting a target on them.”

She locked the apartment and led him into a narrow utility room. From behind the dryer, she removed a plastic packet containing a brass key and a memory card.

“Eleven months ago, Samuel brought me forty-seven documents through the executive signature queue,” she said. “You were flying to Dubai. He said the board needed them before markets opened.”

“And you approved them as me.”

“I released them for your approval. Your security token responded.”

“I had the token with me.”

Vanessa met his eyes. “No. You had a duplicate.”

Daniel remembered Samuel insisting on replacing his token after a supposed software breach. The old one had been destroyed in front of him, or so he believed.

“When did you know?”

“After our second night at the Lowell. Samuel sent me a still image from the hallway camera. He said if I questioned N-17, Claire would receive the entire recording.”

Daniel looked away.

“Don't perform shame for me,” Vanessa said. “I was there too. We both knew she was pregnant.”

“I ended it.”

“You hid it. That isn't the same thing.”

There was no defense. Daniel let the truth stand between them.

Vanessa inserted the memory card into a small camera and showed him photographs taken in Samuel's document room. One image listed thirteen shell companies. Another showed the insurance policy. The final photograph was a typed schedule.

PHASE ONE: COMPROMISE

PHASE TWO: TRANSFER

PHASE THREE: FAMILY EVENT

PHASE FOUR: SUCCESSION

Beside family event was a date nine days away.

“What happens then?” Daniel asked.

“Mercer Development's foundation gala. You, Claire, and Noah were supposed to attend. Samuel made sure the press invitation mentioned your first public family portrait.”

Daniel saw the ballroom in his mind: four hundred guests, vendors, temporary staff, dark service corridors. “The policy pays only if Claire and Noah both die.”

“And succession transfers voting control if you are arrested or declared unfit.”

“To whom?”

Vanessa handed him the brass key. “The controlling documents are in your father's old records room at Mercer headquarters. Samuel thinks that room was sealed after Conrad died. It wasn't.”

Daniel's father had built the company and governed it with equal parts charm and terror. After his private plane went down in the Atlantic five years earlier, Daniel inherited an empire he had spent his adult life trying to deserve.

“Why help me now?” he asked.

Vanessa's face tightened. “Because the men who came here had a photograph of me entering a clinic. I am not pregnant, if that is what you're thinking. My sister is undergoing treatment there. They know where she sleeps.”

She placed the pistol in her bag. “And because Claire called me yesterday.”

Daniel stared. “What did you tell her?”

“Everything about us. She never raised her voice. That made it worse.”

“Did she mention the ledger?”

“She asked one question. She wanted to know whether you were capable of hurting Noah.”

Daniel's throat closed. “What did you say?”

“I told her the man I knew was capable of hurting anyone if he could call the wound protection.”

The words landed because they were true.

Vanessa turned toward the door. “We have six hours before the building staff notices the camera loop. After that, Samuel will know I survived.”

Daniel followed her into the corridor.

As the elevator descended, his phone received a delayed voicemail. Claire's voice came through beneath static.

“Daniel, Samuel found us. If you had anything to do with this, I will make sure Noah never learns your name. If you didn't, prove it. Find out what happened to my father.”

The message ended.

Daniel had met Claire's father only once, twelve years earlier, three weeks before Thomas Ellison died in a highway accident.

Until that moment, Daniel had never known Thomas had worked for Mercer Development.
