THE EMERGENCY CODE / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - the emergency code

The pendant vibrated against Rachel’s skin.

A silent pulse moved through the mansion.

Every active camera connected to the Hale security network began transmitting. Audio from the ballroom, portrait gallery, nursery, library, storage rooms, and underground passages flowed toward Victor’s response team.

Adrian looked at his device.

“What did you do?”

Rachel lifted her chin.

“I invited my father home.”

The ballroom doors burst open.

Victor entered with armed officers.

Guests screamed and moved aside. Douglas Vane stood near the stage, his confident smile disappearing as security surrounded the exits.

Adrian dragged Rachel backward into the portrait gallery.

“Close the doors.”

The guards obeyed.

Ethan moved toward Lily.

A weapon turned in his direction.

He stopped.

Victor’s voice echoed from the ballroom.

“Rachel!”

She shouted through the door.

“We’re in the gallery.”

Adrian placed the weapon against the archive lock.

“You will open this before they enter.”

“Even if I do, you will never leave the mansion.”

“I do not need to leave.”

The final words chilled her.

Adrian was not trying to steal the evidence.

He intended to destroy it.

Smoke began seeping from a device he attached to the archive door.

Nora moved suddenly, striking one guard’s wrist. Elaine drove her shoulder into the second.

The gallery erupted.

Ethan lunged toward Lily and pulled her behind a marble statue. Rachel knocked Adrian’s arm aside as the weapon discharged into the ceiling.

The shot shattered a chandelier fixture above the gallery.

Crystal rained down.

Victor and his officers broke through the doors.

Adrian grabbed Rachel and dragged her toward the balcony.

“Stay back.”

Victor stopped.

His face became terrifyingly still.

“Release her.”

“You should have destroyed Meridian when Margaret warned you.”

“You are not Margaret’s ally.”

“No. I am what remained after you abandoned her.”

Rachel looked at her father.

“Who is he?”

Victor did not answer.

Adrian laughed.

“She still does not know.”

“Know what?” Rachel demanded.

“Your father did not merely hide Margaret’s survival. He traded her location for your safety.”

Victor’s eyes closed for one second.

Rachel felt betrayed before he even spoke.

“There was an extraction operation,” he said. “It failed.”

“You told them where she was?”

“I gave them a false location.”

“Then why did she disappear?”

“Because someone inside my office corrected it.”

Adrian tightened his grip.

“That person received Victor’s command code tonight.”

The archive device finished cutting through the lock.

A warning alarm sounded.

Adrian pushed Rachel aside and ran toward the opening.

Ethan intercepted him.

They crashed against the portrait.

The frame broke free from the wall, revealing a black steel door behind it.

Adrian struck Ethan and reached for the device.

Rachel seized the antique compass from Lily’s neck.

Its needle spun toward Adrian.

Not Victor.

Not Elaine.

Adrian carried a trusted Hale biometric signal.

He saw her looking.

“Your mother trusted me once.”

Rachel pressed the compass against the steel door.

The blue light activated.

VOICE VERIFICATION REQUIRED.

Margaret’s old recording played from the compass.

“The house hears what the family hides.”

The door opened.

Adrian smiled and stepped forward.

Then steel restraints snapped from the doorway and locked around his wrists.

SUCCESSOR DEFENSE ACTIVE.

Rachel stared.

Margaret had designed the archive to recognize coercion.

Officers pulled Adrian away.

Ethan fell to his knees, breathing hard. A guard forced his hands behind his back.

Rachel ran to Lily.

Victor crossed the gallery and embraced both of them.

For a moment, Rachel allowed herself to feel safe.

Then an officer called from the ballroom.

“Admiral, we found the payment authorization.”

Douglas Vane was dragged toward the center of the room.

Elaine stood nearby, holding her injured arm.

The secure tablet displayed payments from Northlight Holdings to Ethan and Adrian.

Yet the final authorization did not bear Douglas’s signature.

It belonged to Elaine Mercer.

Victor turned toward her.

Elaine did not run.

She placed her champagne glass on a tray and stepped forward.

“You activated the code earlier than expected,” she said.

Rachel watched the scene she had imagined while hiding underground unfold exactly as the evidence predicted.

But now she noticed something she had missed before.

Elaine’s eyes were not fixed on Victor.

They were fixed on the open archive.

And someone inside it was moving.
