THE EMERGENCY CODE / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - the woman in the blue room

Rachel struck the console until the monitors flickered back to life.

The blue room remained hidden.

She pressed every switch, but the camera refused to reconnect.

A door opened behind her.

Elaine entered the surveillance chamber.

She had wrapped a handkerchief around her bleeding arm.

Rachel seized a metal flashlight from the console.

“Where is Lily?”

Elaine closed the door.

“Safe for the moment.”

“Who is in that room with her?”

“Someone protecting her.”

“My mother?”

Elaine’s face changed slightly.

“Not exactly.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“You knew the compass would lead Lily there.”

“Yes.”

“You used my daughter as a key.”

“I gave her a device only a direct Hale descendant could activate. Ethan could not open the blue room without her.”

“But you sent her toward it.”

“I sent the compass to you. Ethan intercepted the signal and took Lily.”

“You told her to hide from him. You knew he was dangerous.”

“I knew he was compromised.”

Rachel raised the flashlight.

“Stop speaking like an attorney. Tell me what is happening.”

Elaine looked at the dead monitors.

“Your mother discovered that someone inside Victor’s command structure was selling military logistics data through private contractors. Douglas Vane financed the network. Samuel Pierce supplied medical records. Others created false competency declarations and moved assets from families connected to the investigation.”

“And Ethan?”

“A recruiter. A manipulator. He married you to obtain access to the Hale trust and the west archive.”

Rachel felt nausea rise in her throat.

“Did he ever love me?”

Elaine did not answer quickly enough.

“That is not relevant now.”

“It is relevant to me.”

“Then ask him after your daughter is safe.”

Rachel lowered the flashlight.

“What is inside the archive?”

“Evidence Margaret collected before she disappeared. Names, transactions, operational codes, and proof that the network reached senior levels of government.”

“Why hide it here?”

“Because she trusted the house more than the institutions surrounding her.”

Rachel remembered the words written inside the compass.

The house hears what the family hides.

“Is my mother alive?”

Elaine’s eyes filled with something Rachel could not identify.

“Margaret survived the incident at sea.”

Rachel forgot the ballroom, the trust, and Ethan.

“Where is she?”

“She returned once.”

“When?”

“Three days after the Coast Guard ended the search.”

Rachel staggered back.

“My father knew.”

“Yes.”

“He let me believe she was dead.”

“He believed that was the only way to protect you.”

“Protect me from what?”

“From becoming leverage.”

Rachel thought of fourteen birthdays without her mother. Fourteen years of grieving an empty grave. Fourteen years of watching Victor avoid the west wing.

“That was not protection.”

“No,” Elaine said quietly. “It became a prison.”

The compass began ticking rapidly.

Elaine moved to the control panel and entered a code.

A hidden map appeared. A red point represented Lily inside the blue room. Another signal approached through the passage below.

Ethan.

“He found the lower access route,” Elaine said.

“How?”

“Someone gave him Margaret’s old clearance.”

Rachel looked at the blood on Elaine’s sleeve.

“Who shot you?”

“Douglas Vane’s security chief. He realized I changed the trust papers.”

“You created the forged agreement?”

“I created a version Ethan would believe. The clause transferring the archive was bait.”

Rachel stared at her.

“You used me to expose him.”

“I tried to make him act while Victor was close enough to respond.”

“My father is thousands of miles away.”

“No. His aircraft landed twenty minutes ago.”

“Commander Hayes said it was diverted.”

“It was diverted here.”

Rachel touched the pendant.

“Does he know what’s happening?”

“He knows Meridian communications were compromised. He does not yet know Ethan has Lily.”

Rachel immediately pressed the pendant three times.

Elaine caught her hand.

“Not the location signal. Use the emergency code.”

“That transmits everything.”

“Yes.”

“You told me the network could track it.”

“They can. That is why Ethan must believe he has won before you activate it. Otherwise, the person above Douglas will disappear.”

Rachel pulled away.

“I care about Lily, not your investigation.”

“So did Margaret. That is why the blue room was designed to protect a child before protecting evidence.”

A warning sounded.

The red signal representing Ethan reached the blue room.

Rachel grabbed the silver key.

“How do we open it?”

“We cannot from here.”

“Then how?”

“Lily must open it from inside.”

They ran into the passage.

Halfway down, the walls shook as an explosion struck somewhere beneath the mansion.

Smoke filled the corridor.

Elaine fell.

Rachel pulled her up.

Ahead, the circular blue door opened.

Lily stood in the doorway unharmed, holding the wooden ship.

Behind her stood a woman with silver-streaked hair and Margaret’s coat.

Rachel’s heart stopped.

The woman stepped into the light.

Her face resembled Margaret’s, but she was younger.

“Rachel,” she said. “My name is Nora.”

Rachel could barely speak.

“Who are you?”

May you like

Nora looked toward the smoke behind them.

“Your mother’s replacement.”
