Chapter 12 - the sister without a name

Security officers raised their weapons.
The young woman did not move.
She appeared to be in her late twenties, with dark hair, pale skin, and a scar beneath her left ear. She wore a black service uniform taken from the mansion staff.
“Lower your weapons,” Elaine said.
Victor looked at her.
“You know her?”
Elaine’s voice broke.
“Yes.”
The young woman walked down the staircase.
No one tried to stop her.
Rachel studied every part of her face. She saw Margaret in the shape of the jaw and Victor in the steady gray eyes.
The stranger stopped several feet away.
“My name is Mara.”
Victor gripped the back of a chair.
“How old are you?”
“Twenty-eight.”
Rachel was thirty-three.
Five years separated them.
“You are my daughter?” Victor asked.
Mara’s expression remained guarded.
“Biologically.”
“Why did Margaret never tell me?”
“She tried.”
Elaine stepped between them.
“Margaret discovered she was pregnant during the first Meridian investigation. Victor was deployed, and his communications had been compromised. She believed announcing another child would create another target.”
Rachel looked at Elaine.
“You helped hide her.”
“Yes.”
“From my father?”
“From everyone.”
Mara held up the M-14 file.
“This contains the names of officials who built Meridian. My mother entrusted it to me when I was fourteen.”
Rachel’s heart pounded.
“You saw her fourteen years ago?”
“I lived with her.”
Victor staggered as if struck.
“Margaret raised you?”
“For several years. Then Adrian found us.”
“What happened to her?” Rachel demanded.
Mara looked toward Lily.
“Not in front of the child.”
Rachel asked Mrs. Carter to take Lily into the adjoining salon. Lily resisted until Rachel promised to remain in sight through the glass doors.
When Lily was gone, Mara placed the evidence file on the table.
“Adrian’s team attacked our safe house. My mother created a fire and led them toward the coast. She told me to take the list and find Elaine.”
“Did she survive?” Rachel asked.
“I do not know.”
Victor approached slowly.
“Why did you not come to me?”
“My mother believed someone inside your command office controlled Meridian.”
“I would have protected you.”
“That is what she believed about you before she vanished.”
Victor stopped.
The words landed heavily.
Rachel understood Mara’s distrust. She also understood the grief in Victor’s face.
“What brought you here tonight?” Rachel asked.
“The succession system activated when Ethan forged the transfer. I received Margaret’s signal three days ago.”
“The recording in the compass.”
“Yes.”
“You placed the drive inside Lily’s ship.”
“I needed the ballroom cameras to record Douglas’s reaction.”
“You also frightened my daughter.”
“I kept my face hidden because I did not know whether Ethan had taught her to report strangers.”
Rachel’s anger sharpened.
“She is seven.”
“I was younger when Meridian found me.”
The room fell silent.
Mara’s answer did not excuse her, but it explained the hard distance in her voice.
Elaine opened the M-14 case.
Inside was a stack of names and operational records.
Douglas watched from under guard.
“You open that file, and every person connected to this family becomes a target.”
Mara looked at him.
“We became targets before we knew our own names.”
She removed the first page.
At the top was a list of Meridian directors.
Douglas Vane appeared near the bottom.
Adrian Cross appeared beneath him.
Samuel Pierce was marked as a medical asset.
The highest entries were represented only by operational titles.
DIRECTOR GRAY.
THE STEWARD.
THE WITNESS.
One final position was labeled THE ADMIRAL.
Victor read the page.
“That is not me.”
Mara met his gaze.
“My mother believed it was.”
Rachel saw the pain cross Victor’s face.
“Margaret thought I led Meridian?”
“She believed someone used your authority so completely that the difference no longer mattered.”
Victor reached for the file.
Mara closed it.
“Not yet.”
“I need to know what she found.”
“You need to prove your command network is clean.”
Rachel stepped between them.
“This family has spent fourteen years hiding evidence from one another. That ends now.”
Mara studied her.
“You sound like her.”
“I barely remember her.”
“Perhaps that was the point.”
Elaine’s phone vibrated.
No outside signal should have reached the sealed mansion.
She looked at the screen and went still.
“What is it?” Rachel asked.
Elaine turned the phone around.
A live video showed Commander Hayes standing inside Victor’s military office.
He was holding a weapon.
Behind him, several staff members knelt on the floor.
Hayes looked into the camera.
“Admiral Hale, release Douglas Vane and deliver the M-14 file.”
Victor stepped toward the screen.
“Hayes?”
The commander smiled.
“You spent years searching for the officer who betrayed Margaret.”
May you like
He removed the insignia from his uniform.
“You promoted him three times.”
