THE EMERGENCY CODE / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - the man Rachel married

The circular door opened with forty-three seconds remaining.

Ethan stood outside beside the man disguised as a waiter and two armed guards.

Smoke drifted through the corridor behind them.

Ethan looked relieved when he saw Rachel.

Then he noticed Lily was gone.

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

His expression hardened.

The guards entered first. One searched Nora. The other forced Elaine against the wall.

Ethan stepped into the blue room and stared at the hidden equipment.

For years, he had asked Rachel about the west wing. Now his hunger was visible.

“You knew this was here,” Rachel said.

“I suspected.”

“Before we met?”

He looked at the bookshelves rather than her.

“Does the answer matter?”

“Yes.”

Ethan sighed.

“I knew your name before I knew you.”

Rachel had expected the answer, but hearing it still hurt.

Their first meeting had been at a charity auction in Boston. Ethan spilled coffee on his own jacket to make her laugh. He remembered Lily’s favorite bedtime stories. He stayed awake with Rachel during storms because she hated thunder after her mother vanished at sea.

Every kindness now felt like part of a plan.

“Was Lily part of it?”

“No.”

“She was three when we married. You let her call you Dad.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“That was not supposed to happen.”

“What?”

“I was not supposed to care about either of you.”

Rachel saw the smallest fracture in his composure.

“You did care.”

“I tried.”

“Then stop this.”

He glanced toward the guards.

“There is no stopping it.”

“Who owns you, Ethan?”

His eyes moved to Elaine.

“She knows.”

Elaine laughed bitterly.

“She knows only what Douglas allowed her to discover,” Ethan said.

The waiter approached the central console.

“Open the archive.”

Nora remained still.

“I cannot.”

The man aimed a weapon at Elaine.

“You will.”

Rachel stepped between them.

“You need a Hale descendant.”

“We had one until you sent her away.”

“You still have me.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

Rachel walked toward the scanner.

Her pendant rested beneath her dress, holding Elaine’s copied ledger.

If she activated the code now, the signal might be blocked by the underground walls.

She needed to reach the ballroom.

Rachel placed her palm on the scanner.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

A section of the blue wall opened, revealing a staircase leading upward.

The waiter smiled.

“The archive is above us?”

“Behind the ballroom,” Nora said.

The route Rachel had opened was a controlled path, exactly as she hoped.

The guards forced them up the staircase.

At the top, they entered the portrait gallery overlooking the ballroom. Guests laughed and spoke below, unaware of the armed men behind the walls.

A large family portrait concealed the final archive door.

Margaret stood in the painting beside Victor and a nine-year-old Rachel.

The compass symbol had been carved into its frame.

Ethan looked at young Rachel’s painted face.

“I did not plan for any of this.”

“You planned to take my inheritance.”

“I planned to transfer it.”

“To whom?”

He glanced toward the waiter.

“To people who said they would destroy my family if I refused.”

Rachel had never heard Ethan mention relatives.

“What family?”

“My brother was arrested eight years ago. Vane arranged his release. Since then, every debt became another order.”

“That does not excuse what you did.”

“I know.”

“Then help me.”

Ethan looked at her for a long moment.

The waiter struck him across the face.

“Enough.”

Rachel realized the disguised man was not an ordinary guard.

“Who are you?”

He removed the catering jacket.

Underneath was a tailored black suit with a silver compass pin.

“My name is Adrian Cross.”

Elaine inhaled sharply.

Rachel looked at her.

“You know him?”

“I thought he was dead.”

Adrian smiled.

“Many people connected to Margaret Hale are officially dead.”

He pressed a device against the archive lock.

The security system rejected him.

He seized Rachel’s wrist.

“Open it.”

“No.”

Adrian aimed his weapon at Ethan.

Rachel almost laughed at the choice.

“You think I will protect him?”

“No,” Adrian said. “But he will protect Lily.”

Ethan’s face changed.

Adrian continued.

“My men found the child beneath the east staircase.”

Rachel felt the room tilt.

A guard opened the gallery door.

Lily stood in the corridor with a weapon pressed near her shoulder. She was frightened but unharmed.

The compass around her neck pointed not at Rachel, but toward the ballroom entrance below.

Someone with a trusted Hale signal was approaching.

Rachel placed her hand over the pendant.

Five taps would activate the emergency code.

She pressed once.

Ethan saw the movement.

Adrian did not.

Rachel pressed again.

“Open the archive,” Adrian ordered.

A third tap.

The mansion doors below began to open.

A fourth.

May you like

Lily looked toward the sound and whispered, “Grandpa.”

Rachel pressed the pendant one final time.
