Chapter 7 - What Evelyn Kept Beneath the Kitchen

Oliver spent the night in the hospital.

The blood tests confirmed a small dose of sedative, but the amount was lower than before.

He told Maya that a voice had awakened him through the speaker beside his bed.

The voice said Maya was outside waiting.

When he opened his bedroom door, the hallway lights turned off.

A shadow moved near the stairs.

Oliver became frightened and climbed out the window because “the wall lady” had once told him the garden path was safe.

Maya asked when he had met the wall lady before.

Oliver said, “In my dreams.”

Ryan sat beside the hospital window, listening.

He looked older than he had one week earlier.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the doctor’s test?” he asked.

“I tried to tell you.”

“You told me after hitting my mother.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“Of what she could make you believe.”

Ryan looked down.

Maya did not soften the truth.

“She showed you planted pills, and you doubted me.”

“I was confused.”

“You kept me away from Oliver.”

“For ten minutes.”

“It only took ten minutes for me to understand that your mother could separate me from my son whenever she wanted.”

Ryan’s eyes filled with pain.

“I’m sorry.”

Maya looked at Oliver sleeping between them.

“Sorry won’t fix this.”

“No.”

“But you can start by choosing the truth even when it hurts.”

Ryan nodded.

“What do you need me to do?”

“Help me open the drawer.”

They returned home with Jonah shortly before sunrise.

Evelyn had been taken to a hotel after refusing to remain near Maya.

Her attorney had already filed a complaint accusing the police of harassment.

The kitchen was quiet.

Orange pills still remained beneath the table, marked by evidence tags.

Maya knelt beside the locked cabinet.

The silver key slid into the lock.

It turned smoothly.

Inside were three folders.

The first contained legal documents.

The second held medical records.

The third contained photographs.

Ryan opened the legal folder.

His face changed as he read.

“What is it?” Maya asked.

“A petition for temporary guardianship.”

“Of Oliver?”

“Yes.”

The petition claimed Maya had become violent and delusional.

It stated Ryan traveled frequently and could not provide full-time care.

Evelyn would receive immediate custody until both parents completed psychiatric evaluations.

The filing date was blank.

The signatures were already attached.

Ryan touched his own name.

“I didn’t sign this.”

Jonah examined it.

“A professional forgery.”

Maya opened the medical folder.

There were reports from hospitals she had never visited.

Diagnoses she had never received.

Descriptions of hallucinations, aggression, and suicidal behavior.

Each page created a version of Maya who could never be trusted.

“They built a second life for me,” she whispered.

Jonah nodded.

“A paper life.”

Ryan found a photograph of Maya unconscious in bed.

A bottle of pills rested near her hand.

The date was six months earlier.

Maya remembered that night.

Evelyn had brought her tea after an argument.

Maya slept for fourteen hours.

When she woke, Ryan was away on business, and Evelyn claimed she had been exhausted.

Ryan turned the photograph over.

Written on the back were the words:

PHASE 2 COMPLETE.

He closed his eyes.

“My mother drugged you.”

“Yes.”

“I left you here with her.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

Jonah opened the third folder.

The photographs inside showed Oliver at different ages.

Sleeping.

Playing.

Visiting doctors.

Each image contained detailed notes.

Height.

Weight.

Blood type.

Lung capacity.

Immune markers.

One page was labeled DONOR DEVELOPMENT.

Maya felt sick.

“Donor for whom?”

Jonah continued turning pages.

At the bottom of the folder was an image of a teenage girl lying in a hospital bed.

Her face was partly hidden by an oxygen mask.

Ryan took the picture.

“I know her.”

Maya looked at him.

“Who is she?”

Ryan’s voice became distant.

“My sister.”

Maya stared at him.

“You never told me you had a sister.”

“Because she died when I was eleven.”

May you like

He turned the picture over.

The date was from two months earlier.
