Chapter 15 - The Man Behind the Glass

The official story spread quickly.

Evelyn Mercer had been arrested for child endangerment, evidence fabrication, unlawful medication, and conspiracy to obtain custody through fraudulent means.

Her attorney withdrew from the case within forty-eight hours.

The court cleared Maya of the false psychiatric claims.

The hospital confirmed that Oliver’s medication had repeatedly been replaced.

For the first time in months, Ryan, Maya, and Oliver slept in the same room without cameras watching them.

It should have been enough.

It was not.

Celia had vanished from a guarded hospital room without triggering a single alarm.

Anna Vale remained missing.

The storage device containing the footage from Oliver’s birth had disappeared during a blackout that affected only the Mercer property.

Dr. Lena Shah resigned from the clinic and stopped answering calls.

Detective Jonah Reed was placed on administrative leave after internal investigators discovered his former connection to the Arden Biomedical Trust.

And Evelyn refused to speak.

For nine days, Ryan visited her detention center.

For nine days, she sat behind the glass and stared at him without touching the telephone.

On the tenth day, she finally lifted the receiver.

Ryan did the same.

“Where is Celia?”

Evelyn’s eyes looked darker beneath the fluorescent lights.

“Safe, for now.”

“Who took her?”

“The same person who brought Oliver to the hospital.”

“My father?”

She did not answer.

Ryan leaned closer.

“You said he was alive.”

“I said that his death was the second lie.”

“Where is he?”

“You are asking the wrong question.”

“What should I ask?”

“Why did he choose your family?”

Ryan’s hand tightened around the receiver.

“My family was already his family.”

Evelyn gave a faint smile.

“That depends on who you believe you are.”

Ryan stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

“Did you ever see your own birth certificate?”

“Yes.”

“The original?”

He hesitated.

Evelyn noticed.

“Your father did not build the embryo program for Celia.”

“You told me he did.”

“I told you what would lead you to the facility.”

“You wanted me to find her?”

“I needed you to remove her before the transfer.”

“What transfer?”

Evelyn looked toward the guard.

Her voice lowered.

“Celia was never the patient.”

Ryan felt cold.

“Then who was?”

“Oliver.”

“He’s four years old.”

“He is also the legal key to something the Arden Trust has protected for almost fifty years.”

“The inheritance?”

“Money is the smallest part.”

Ryan pressed the receiver against his ear.

“What is the largest?”

Evelyn’s gaze held his.

“Evidence.”

“Of what?”

“Thousands of children whose identities were rewritten.”

Ryan stopped breathing.

Evelyn continued.

“Oliver was not the first infant placed in the wrong family. He was the first one Anna Vale successfully removed from the program.”

“Why give him to us?”

“She didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

Evelyn looked past Ryan.

Someone stood in the observation corridor behind him.

Ryan saw only a reflection in the glass.

A tall man.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

A familiar posture from an old family photograph.

Ryan turned.

The corridor was empty.

When he faced Evelyn again, she was smiling.

“He’s here,” she whispered.

Ryan looked toward the door.

“Who?”

“The man you buried.”

The lights inside the detention center flickered.

A guard entered the room and announced that the visit was over.

Ryan refused to move.

“Tell me where he is.”

Evelyn placed her free hand against the glass.

“Go home.”

“Why?”

“Because Maya just opened the footage.”

Ryan’s blood ran cold.

“The device was stolen.”

“Not stolen.”

“Then where was it?”

“Returned to the person it was meant for.”

Ryan stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

Evelyn tapped the glass.

“One more thing.”

He lifted the receiver again.

“What?”

“When you see the man in the video, do not call him Father.”

The line disconnected.

Ryan ran from the detention center.

At home, Maya sat alone in the kitchen.

Oliver was asleep upstairs.

The security cameras had been removed, but the dark marks where they once hung remained on the walls.

On the marble island sat a padded envelope.

No return address.

Inside was the missing storage device.

Maya had already connected it to an offline laptop.

The video was paused.

The image showed St. Catherine’s Hospital on the night Oliver was born.

A nurse carried an infant through a restricted corridor.

Anna Vale followed behind her.

Evelyn stood near an elevator.

And beside Evelyn was a man Ryan recognized from every photograph of his childhood.

His father.

Thomas Mercer.

Alive.

Maya pressed play.

Thomas looked directly toward the hospital camera.

His voice came through the speakers.

“The Mercer infant is dead. Move the Arden child before Evelyn changes the plan.”

Ryan entered the kitchen.

Maya turned toward him.

Neither of them spoke.

On the screen, Anna took the infant and ran toward a stairwell.

Evelyn followed.

Thomas remained behind.

Then another figure stepped out of the shadows.

Maya moved closer to the laptop.

The figure wore a surgical mask.

Thomas handed the stranger a second infant.

Ryan whispered, “There were two babies.”

The masked figure removed one glove.

A ring appeared on the stranger’s hand.

Maya recognized it.

She had seen the same ring only days earlier.

On the hand of someone they had trusted inside their home.

The video froze.

A message appeared across the screen.

PLAYBACK INTERRUPTED.

LIVE CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.

The kitchen camera above the doorway, which Ryan had personally removed, made a soft clicking sound.

Both of them looked up.

A tiny red light glowed inside the empty hole in the wall.

A man’s voice came through the hidden speaker.

“Ryan.”

Ryan stepped in front of Maya.

“Who are you?”

The voice ignored him.

“Maya, take Oliver and leave through the garden.”

Maya’s face went pale.

She knew the voice.

“Anna?”

Static crackled.

Then Anna Vale whispered, “Do not use the front door.”

Headlights appeared beyond the kitchen windows.

One vehicle entered the driveway.

Then another.

Then six more.

Men in dark coats stepped out.

Ryan grabbed Maya’s hand.

The laptop screen changed.

A live video showed Oliver sleeping upstairs.

Someone was standing beside his bed.

Maya screamed his name and ran toward the staircase.

The bedroom feed zoomed closer.

The stranger leaned over Oliver and placed a hand on the child’s shoulder.

A silver ring flashed beneath the sleeve.

Ryan stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

The man beside Oliver slowly turned toward the hidden camera.

He removed his surgical mask.

Ryan stared at the screen.

The face was older.

Scarred.

But unmistakable.

Thomas Mercer smiled.

Then he looked directly into the camera and said,

“Hello, son.”

Upstairs, Oliver opened his eyes.

Thomas lifted one finger to his lips.

May you like

The front door began to unlock.

And from somewhere beneath the kitchen floor, a second child started crying.
