Chapter 13 - The Kitchen Trap

Ryan decided they had only one advantage.
Evelyn believed Maya was running.
So they returned home.
Lena protested.
Jonah had already warned them that officers were searching every road out of the county.
Ryan explained that the safest hiding place was the location no fugitive would willingly choose.
The Mercer house.
They entered through the old garden gate after midnight.
The security system was active, but Ryan knew the emergency maintenance code Evelyn had used since his childhood.
They disabled the hallway cameras one by one.
Maya carried Oliver upstairs.
Ryan searched Evelyn’s bedroom.
Everything was perfectly arranged.
No papers.
No laptop.
No clothes missing.
It looked as though she planned to return.
Maya noticed a pearl-gray suit hanging near the window.
The same suit Evelyn wore almost every day.
“Why does she own six identical ones?”
Ryan checked the pockets.
Empty.
Maya examined the lining and found a hidden seam.
Inside was a small key and a strip of transparent film.
The film contained microscopic text.
Lena used her phone camera to enlarge it.
A list of dates appeared.
Each date corresponded to one of Oliver’s medical emergencies.
Beside the dates were initials.
E.M.
J.R.
L.S.
Maya looked at Lena.
“Your initials.”
Lena’s face drained of color.
“I didn’t write this.”
“Were you involved?”
“No.”
“Why is your name here?”
“I don’t know.”
Ryan pointed to another set.
A.V.
Anna Vale.
Below the list was a final entry scheduled for the following afternoon.
TRANSFER EVENT.
LOCATION: MERCER RESIDENCE.
“They’re coming here,” Ryan said.
Maya looked around the bedroom.
“For Oliver?”
“For something in the house.”
Lena studied the list.
“Maybe the hidden footage.”
“What footage?”
“The cameras have stored recordings for years. Evelyn may have kept local backups.”
Ryan remembered the camera above the kitchen entrance.
“She watches the kitchen more than any other room.”
They went downstairs.
The camera was connected to the wall through a concealed cable.
Ryan removed the outer panel.
Behind it was a second wire leading beneath the floor.
They followed it to the locked kitchen drawer.
The drawer was empty except for scratches along the back panel.
Ryan pressed the wood.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a small storage device.
Maya recognized it immediately.
The same type the detective would later remove during the confrontation.
Lena reached for it.
Ryan stopped her.
“No.”
Her eyes widened.
“You think I’m part of this?”
“I think everyone has lied to us.”
Lena slowly lowered her hand.
“That’s fair.”
They inserted the device into an offline laptop.
Dozens of video files appeared.
Most were labeled by date.
The earliest recording was from the night Oliver was born.
Before they could open it, headlights swept across the kitchen windows.
Three vehicles entered the driveway.
Ryan closed the laptop.
“Upstairs.”
Maya carried Oliver toward the stairs.
The front door unlocked.
Evelyn entered alone.
She wore the pearl-gray suit.
Her gaze moved across the dark house.
“Ryan?”
No answer.
She walked into the kitchen.
Ryan stepped from behind the island.
Evelyn stopped.
“You came home.”
“So did you.”
“Where is Oliver?”
“Safe.”
“With Maya?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s face hardened.
“You are making a terrible mistake.”
“You told me Celia was dead.”
“I protected you from a truth you could not survive.”
“You imprisoned her.”
“I paid to keep her alive.”
“You poisoned my son.”
“I measured him.”
“You drugged my wife.”
“I documented her instability.”
Ryan’s hand closed around the edge of the counter.
“She is not unstable.”
“She kidnapped Oliver from a hospital under court protection.”
“Because of documents you forged.”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“Can you prove that?”
Ryan looked toward the camera.
“Yes.”
For the first time, Evelyn noticed the panel had been opened.
Her calm vanished.
“Where is the device?”
“Why are you afraid of it?”
“You don’t understand what you found.”
“Then explain it.”
She stepped closer.
“The recording contains evidence that could destroy not only me, but you.”
“I’ve heard that threat before.”
“It is not a threat.”
“What happened the night Oliver was born?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with something that almost resembled grief.
“You lost a son.”
Ryan swallowed.
“And Oliver?”
“He was brought to us.”
“By whom?”
“Your father.”
Ryan stared at her.
“My father had been dead for twelve years.”
Evelyn whispered, “That is the second lie I told you.”
A sound came from the staircase.
Oliver coughed.
Evelyn looked up.
Ryan blocked her path.
She reached into her purse.
Maya came down holding Oliver.
“Don’t move.”
Evelyn withdrew a medicine bottle.
Orange pills.
Maya froze.
Evelyn threw the bottle across the floor.
It shattered.
The pills scattered beneath the island.
Then Evelyn struck Maya across the face.
Maya fell, clutching Oliver.
Her nose began to bleed.
Ryan rushed forward.
The front door opened.
May you like
Police sirens screamed outside.
Exactly as Evelyn had planned.
