Chapter 14 - The Arrest That Solved Nothing

The police entered to find Maya on the floor, blood on her face, Oliver feverish in her arms, and orange pills scattered around them.
Evelyn raised both hands.
“She attacked me,” she said.
Ryan looked at her in disbelief.
“You hit her.”
“She tried to force medication into Oliver’s mouth.”
Maya shouted, “She’s lying.”
An officer moved toward her.
“Put the child down.”
“No.”
“Maya,” Ryan said, “let me take him.”
She looked at him.
For one painful second, fear entered her eyes.
Not fear of Evelyn.
Fear that Ryan might hand Oliver over.
He knelt beside her.
“I believe you.”
Maya slowly transferred Oliver into his arms.
Ryan opened the emergency inhaler case.
Empty.
His face turned pale.
“Where is my son’s inhaler?”
Evelyn lifted her chin.
“You’re overreacting.”
Sirens echoed beyond the windows.
Paramedics entered.
Detective Jonah Reed followed them.
He looked at the room, then at Evelyn.
“Everyone stay where you are.”
Evelyn’s attorney pushed through the officers.
“My client has been cooperating with the court.”
Jonah ignored him.
Maya pointed to the locked drawer.
“His inhaler is inside.”
Evelyn replied too quickly.
“There is no inhaler in that drawer.”
Jonah looked at her.
“You seem certain.”
The room became silent.
He opened the drawer.
Inside was Oliver’s inhaler.
Beside it were the custody papers, forged medical reports, staged photographs, and hidden records.
Evelyn’s attorney stopped speaking.
Ryan flipped through the folder.
Each page destroyed another piece of the story his mother had built.
When he reached the photograph labeled PHASE 2 COMPLETE, his hands began to shake.
“Mom,” he whispered. “What have you done?”
Evelyn looked toward the camera.
“You weren’t supposed to find those.”
Jonah reached into the hidden compartment and removed the storage device.
Evelyn lunged.
Two officers restrained her.
“Do not play it,” she shouted.
Jonah inserted the device into a police tablet.
The video dated four years earlier appeared.
The night Oliver was born.
A woman’s voice spoke through the speakers.
“If Ryan ever discovers who the boy really belongs to, none of us survive.”
The screen began to brighten.
Before the figure came into view, the kitchen lights went out.
A loud electrical crack sounded from outside.
The security system died.
Someone screamed.
When emergency lights activated, the back door was open.
Jonah still held the tablet.
But the storage device was gone.
Evelyn was on the floor between two officers.
She had not taken it.
Neither had Maya.
Neither had Ryan.
Lena stood near the hallway.
Her right hand was closed.
Maya looked at her.
“Open your hand.”
Lena stared back.
“What?”
“Open it.”
Slowly, Lena raised both hands.
They were empty.
Jonah ordered the officers to search the house.
One officer found muddy footprints near the back door.
Another discovered a cut cable beside the garden wall.
A third reported that the police vehicles’ cameras had stopped recording thirty seconds before the blackout.
Someone had planned the interruption.
Evelyn began laughing.
Ryan looked at her.
“What’s funny?”
“You still think I am the person you should fear.”
“You poisoned a child.”
“I delayed a transfer.”
“You tried to steal him.”
“I tried to keep him from them.”
“Who?”
Evelyn’s laughter stopped.
“The people who just entered your house while it was filled with police.”
Jonah stepped closer.
“Give us a name.”
She looked at him.
“You already know it.”
Two officers handcuffed her.
As they led her toward the door, Maya followed.
“Where is Ryan’s father?”
Evelyn stopped.
For the first time, she looked tired.
“He is closer than you think.”
“Is he alive?”
Evelyn glanced at Oliver being treated by the paramedics.
Then she leaned toward Maya.
“When he comes for the boy, do not let Ryan choose between them.”
“Between whom?”
Evelyn smiled sadly.
“His father and his son.”
She was taken outside.
Ryan remained in the kitchen, staring at the empty space where the storage device had been.
The police had arrested Evelyn.
The forged records had been exposed.
The court order against Maya would be suspended.
Oliver would stay with his parents.
For a brief moment, it should have felt like victory.
Then Jonah received a call.
He listened without speaking.
“What happened?” Maya asked.
May you like
Jonah lowered the phone.
“Celia is gone.”
