Chapter 5 - The Deposit Box

First Union Bank’s fourteenth branch occupied the ground floor of an old stone building near the river.

Ethan, Elena, and Nathaniel arrived separately.

Elena wore a loose black coat and a scarf over her hair. Ethan entered through the underground garage. Nathaniel approached from the neighboring law office.

The brass key opened deposit box 617.

Inside were three envelopes, a flash drive, and a small cassette recorder.

One envelope was marked For Ethan.

The second read For the Mother of My Grandchild.

The third carried only a date.

The date Arthur Vale died.

Ethan opened his envelope.

Son,

If you are reading this, you are about to become a father.

That means the people I failed to stop may now target your family.

You were raised as my son, and nothing written elsewhere can change that truth. But the circumstances of your arrival in our home were hidden from you. Vivian insisted it was necessary. For years, I believed her.

I was wrong.

Do not confront her until you understand Saint Orla House.

Trust the woman who protects your child, even when the truth turns you against your own name.

Ethan read the line again.

“You were raised as my son.”

His hands tightened around the page.

Elena touched his arm.

“You are still Arthur’s son.”

“What circumstances?”

Nathaniel opened the third envelope.

It contained copies of medical records from Saint Orla House.

Most names had been removed, but one page documented the birth of a male child twenty-nine years earlier.

The mother was identified only as Patient 32.

The newborn had been transferred to a private guardian less than twelve hours after birth.

The guardian’s signature was Vivian’s.

Ethan stared at it.

“This says she took me from Saint Orla.”

“We don’t know that the child was you,” Elena said.

“The date matches my birthday.”

Nathaniel examined another page.

“There is a blood-type notation.”

Ethan looked at him.

“My father was O positive. My mother says she is A positive.”

“The child was AB negative.”

Ethan was AB negative.

The room became silent.

Elena opened the envelope addressed to her.

The letter inside was shorter.

Elena,

I do not know your name, but I know what you may one day face.

Vivian believes love is ownership. Malcolm believes every human bond has a price. Together, they turned a child into an instrument of inheritance.

Your baby is not responsible for the sins of this family.

If Vivian attempts to control your medical care, look for Dr. Marcus Bell. His father worked at Saint Orla House, and Marcus inherited more than a profession from him.

The final page was missing.

The paper ended halfway through a sentence.

Nathaniel searched the box.

“There should be more.”

Ethan inserted the flash drive into the bank’s secure computer.

It required a password.

A question appeared.

What did Arthur call the child he could not save?

Ethan did not know.

Elena looked at the photograph.

The young woman wore a small necklace. A round pendant hung near the baby’s blanket.

Elena zoomed in with her phone.

The pendant contained a single engraved word.

Lark.

“Try Lark,” she said.

The drive unlocked.

Folders filled the screen.

Shell-company transfers.

Hospital payments.

Board correspondence.

Private surveillance photographs.

One folder was titled Saint Orla.

Ethan opened it.

There were photographs of Vivian entering the maternity residence. Malcolm appeared in several images, though he was much younger.

A third person stood beside them.

Dr. Bell’s father.

The final photograph showed Arthur arguing with Vivian in a parking lot. Arthur pointed toward a car.

Inside the car sat the auburn-haired woman from Elena’s photograph.

She was holding the newborn child.

Ethan enlarged the image.

The baby’s face was partly visible.

A small white identification band circled his wrist.

The number on the band was 32-7.

Ethan checked the medical record.

Patient 32.

Infant 7.

“It was me,” he whispered.

Nathaniel clicked another document.

It was a handwritten statement from Arthur.

Vivian told me Patient 32 abandoned the child. I believed adoption would save him. I later discovered the mother had been declared dead under a false name. She survived and spent years searching for her son.

Elena looked at Ethan.

“Your biological mother may have been alive.”

“May have been?”

Nathaniel scrolled down.

The last paragraph had been scanned poorly, but the words were visible.

She contacted me again this morning. She says Malcolm has found her. If anything happens to either of us, the evidence is inside—

The sentence ended.

A warning appeared on the computer.

Remote access detected.

The screen went black.

The bank manager rushed into the room.

“Someone attempted to access this terminal from an external account.”

“Can they delete the drive?” Ethan asked.

“No, but they may have copied the file names.”

Nathaniel removed the flash drive.

“We need to leave.”

As they exited the vault, Ethan’s phone rang.

Vivian’s name appeared.

He answered.

“Where are you?” she asked.

“At a meeting.”

“With Nathaniel Brooks?”

Ethan looked toward the security camera above the bank corridor.

“Why do you ask?”

“Because the police have just arrived at his home.”

Nathaniel stopped walking.

Vivian continued calmly.

“They found financial documents stolen from Vale Meridian.”

“That is impossible.”

“Is it?”

Ethan heard papers moving on her end.

“Nathaniel will be arrested by nightfall,” Vivian said. “And if Elena continues encouraging your paranoia, I will make sure the court understands exactly how unstable she has become.”

The call ended.

Nathaniel looked at Ethan.

“She’s moving faster than Arthur expected.”

Elena held the flash drive close.

“No,” she said. “She’s terrified.”

As they reached the bank lobby, police vehicles stopped outside.

Nathaniel handed the flash drive to Elena.

“Take the rear exit.”

“What about you?”

“If I run, I look guilty.”

“You’ll be arrested.”

“I know.”

Ethan refused to move.

Nathaniel gripped his shoulder.

“Protect your wife. Protect the child. That is why Arthur created the trust.”

Police officers entered.

Nathaniel walked toward them with his hands visible.

Elena and Ethan escaped through the staff corridor.

Behind them, Nathaniel was placed in handcuffs.

As the officers led him away, he called out one final warning.

“Do not let Elena deliver at Saint Matthew’s Hospital.”

May you like

Saint Matthew’s was where Dr. Bell worked.

It was also where Elena was scheduled to give birth.
