Chapter 15 - The Beneficiary Behind the Door

Nathaniel’s office had been searched by police, but the sealed vault beneath his private conference room remained untouched.
Ethan and Elena arrived after sunset.
Nora accompanied them.
Vivian remained in custody. Judge Kent had agreed to cooperate. Gideon Shaw was being questioned, and international warrants had been issued for Malcolm Cross and Dr. Bell.
The immediate danger appeared to be weakening.
Elena’s false medical directives had been canceled.
Every custody petition had been withdrawn.
The hospital transport contracts were suspended.
Nathaniel’s reputation had been restored.
For the first time in weeks, Elena could imagine giving birth without someone waiting to take her child.
But Arthur’s final secret remained.
Nathaniel opened the floor vault with two keys.
Inside was a narrow metal case.
The Vale family crest had been removed from its surface.
In its place was a small bird.
A lark.
Ethan stared at it.
“Arthur used the same symbol as the people he feared.”
“Arthur created the first Lark Trust,” Nathaniel said. “Margaret took the name later.”
“What was the original trust?”
“A private fund for women and children harmed by Saint Orla House.”
Elena sat beside Ethan.
“So Arthur tried to repair what happened.”
“Yes. But when he discovered the network extended into Vale Meridian, he divided the Legacy Trust into two levels.”
Nathaniel removed a sealed envelope.
“The first beneficiary receives protection.”
“Our daughter,” Ethan said.
“The document does not name your daughter.”
Ethan looked at Elena.
“Then who does it name?”
Nathaniel broke the seal.
Inside was a birth certificate, a guardianship revocation, and a handwritten letter.
The birth certificate belonged to Ethan.
His original name was listed as Elias Ellison.
Mother: Mara Ellison.
Father: Unknown.
The guardianship revocation had been signed by Mara three months after Ethan’s birth.
She had never surrendered him.
Vivian’s adoption was invalid.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Elena held his hand.
Nathaniel unfolded Arthur’s letter.
Ethan,
If you are reading this, Vivian’s authority has ended and the first stage of the trust is active.
The child Vivian took from Saint Orla is the first protected beneficiary.
Ethan looked up.
“Me?”
Nathaniel nodded.
“The controlling shares were never intended to pass directly to your daughter.”
“But the amendment says the lawful descendant becomes beneficiary at birth.”
“The amendment shown to the board was incomplete.”
Nathaniel turned to the next page.
“The birth of your child activates your legal ownership. Arthur created the delay so the network would believe the baby controlled the inheritance.”
Elena understood first.
“Arthur used our child as a decoy.”
“He believed no one would reveal the crimes until they thought the final shares were within reach.”
Ethan stood abruptly.
“He made my wife and daughter targets.”
“He also created protections around them.”
“Protections that failed.”
“Yes.”
Nathaniel did not defend Arthur.
Ethan moved toward the window.
“Why didn’t he simply give me the company?”
“Because he needed proof that you were not working with Vivian.”
Ethan turned.
“My father tested me through my unborn child?”
“He did not know whether you had learned the truth about your adoption. He feared you might already be part of the network.”
Elena looked at the final document.
“What is the second level?”
Nathaniel hesitated.
“The second level transfers Arthur’s private evidence archive and all assets recovered from Lark Holdings.”
“To Ethan?”
“No.”
“Then to whom?”
Nathaniel read the beneficiary line twice.
His face tightened.
“This cannot be correct.”
Nora moved closer.
“What does it say?”
Nathaniel turned the page toward them.
The beneficiary’s name had been covered by a black security strip. A mechanical lock protected the final section.
Beside it was an instruction.
Verification requires the voice of Mara Ellison.
Ethan stared at the words.
“If Mara is dead, the document can never be opened.”
“Arthur believed she was alive when he created it,” Nathaniel said.
“Where was she?”
“He would not tell me.”
Elena examined the metal case.
A small light blinked near the mechanical lock.
“It has power.”
Nora checked the device.
“It’s connected to an internal recorder.”
Nathaniel placed the document inside the reader.
A message appeared.
Voice verification available.
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“We don’t have her voice.”
The office phone rang.
Everyone became still.
Nathaniel looked at the display.
The call came from the building’s reception desk.
He answered.
“Yes?”
The night guard spoke rapidly.
Nathaniel’s expression changed.
“How did she enter?”
He listened.
Then he looked at Ethan.
“There is a woman downstairs.”
“What woman?”
“She says her name is Mara Ellison.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Elena rose carefully from her chair.
Nora drew her radio.
“Do not let her upstairs until we verify her identity.”
Nathaniel relayed the instruction.
The guard did not respond.
“Hello?”
Only static came through the telephone.
Then the elevator at the end of the corridor sounded.
The doors opened.
No one stepped out.
A small cassette recorder lay on the elevator floor.
Ethan approached slowly.
A handwritten label had been attached to it.
For my son.
He pressed play.
A woman’s voice filled the corridor.
“Elias, if you are hearing this, they finally allowed you to discover the first lie.”
Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.
The mechanical lock inside Nathaniel’s office released with a loud click.
Voice verification accepted.
Elena looked toward the opened document reader.
The black security strip began retracting from the beneficiary’s name.
Before the name appeared, every light in the office went out.
Nora raised her radio.
“Security, report.”
No answer came.
A figure appeared at the far end of the dark corridor.
It was a woman wearing a long coat.
Her face remained hidden in shadow.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Mara?”
The woman did not answer.
She placed a hand against the wall.
The emergency lights flickered on.
In her other hand, she held the missing final page from Arthur’s letter.
Elena recognized the torn edge.
The woman looked directly at Ethan.
“You were never supposed to open that document without me.”
“Are you my mother?”
Her expression tightened.
Before she could answer, a second elevator began rising from the underground garage.
Nora checked the building-security screen.
The elevator contained three unidentified passengers.
One of them was carrying a hospital medical case.
Another matched the description of Dr. Marcus Bell.
The woman in the corridor turned toward Ethan.
“If Bell reaches this floor, the name inside that document will disappear forever.”
“Whose name is it?” Elena asked.
The elevator display changed.
Floor 4.
Floor 5.
Floor 6.
The woman opened Arthur’s missing page.
“You believe Margaret Lark wanted your daughter because of the company.”
Floor 7.
Ethan moved toward her.
“Then why did she want her?”
Floor 8.
The woman finally stepped into the emergency light.
She had the same auburn hair as the young mother in Arthur’s photograph.
And around her neck was the round pendant engraved with the word Lark.
“Because Elena’s child is not the first baby in this family they tried to claim.”
Floor 9.
Nathaniel looked down at the partially revealed beneficiary line.
Only the first two letters could be seen.
EL.
Elena’s hand moved protectively over her belly.
The elevator reached their floor.
A bell sounded.
May you like
Mara looked toward the opening doors and whispered five words that made Ethan turn pale.
“Your daughter has already been registered.”
