Chapter 14 - The Last Board Meeting

Two days later, Ethan returned to Vale Meridian Tower.

This time, Elena went with him.

Dr. Patel had advised her to remain in the hospital, but Elena refused to let Malcolm and Vivian’s remaining allies control the story.

Nora arranged medical support and private security.

When the elevator doors opened onto the boardroom floor, every employee in the corridor fell silent.

News of Vivian’s arrest had already spread.

Malcolm was still missing.

The board had called an emergency meeting to determine company leadership.

Six members expected Elena to remain hidden in a hospital bed.

Instead, she entered beside Ethan wearing a simple dark blue dress, one hand resting over her belly.

Nora followed with two investigators.

The board’s acting chair, Gideon Shaw, stood.

“This meeting is restricted.”

Elena placed Arthur’s trust amendment on the table.

“As the temporary representative of the primary beneficiary, I am attending.”

“The child has not been born.”

“Then you may explain to a court why this board tried to seize control by forging her mother’s medical records.”

Gideon sat down.

Ethan connected a laptop to the boardroom screen.

Arthur’s financial files appeared.

Payments to Lark Holdings.

Illegal hospital transfers.

False acquisitions.

Bribes.

The directors watched their own names appear beside authorization codes.

Two began calling their attorneys.

One tried to leave.

Nora blocked the door.

“You are not under arrest,” she said. “But destroying evidence after this moment will change that.”

Ethan played the recording from Vivian’s study.

Malcolm’s voice filled the boardroom.

“If Elena refuses to sign, Bell will certify incapacity.”

The unknown woman’s voice followed.

“The child must be born inside our system.”

Gideon’s face had lost its color.

Elena noticed.

“You know that voice,” she said.

“No.”

“You reacted before Malcolm spoke.”

“I was shocked.”

“Who is Margaret Lark?”

Gideon looked toward the other directors.

No one helped him.

Ethan displayed a photograph recovered from Arthur’s drive.

It showed Gideon entering Saint Orla House with Malcolm twenty-nine years earlier.

“You were there,” Ethan said.

“I represented a medical investor.”

“You represented Lark Holdings.”

“I represented many clients.”

“You also voted to suspend me and appoint Vivian.”

Gideon’s voice became sharp.

“Your personal family crisis nearly destroyed this company.”

“No,” Elena said. “Your crimes nearly destroyed it.”

Nora placed the black notebook on the table.

“Judge Kent has confirmed that Malcolm paid for the emergency custody order. The ambulance driver identified Gideon Shaw as the owner of the transport company.”

Every face turned toward Gideon.

He stood abruptly.

“This is absurd.”

“You may explain it to investigators,” Nora said.

Gideon moved toward the side door.

Ethan stepped in front of him.

“Where is Malcolm?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is Dr. Bell?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is Mara Ellison?”

Gideon’s expression changed.

It was small but unmistakable.

“You do know her,” Ethan said.

Gideon smiled.

“You should stop searching.”

“She’s my mother.”

“She gave birth to you. Do not confuse biology with loyalty.”

“Where is she?”

“If she wanted to be found, she would have returned.”

“Maybe she couldn’t.”

Gideon leaned closer.

“Arthur found her once. Look what happened to him.”

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

Elena stepped beside him.

“Threatening him in front of investigators is not intelligent.”

“I am not threatening him. I am warning both of you.”

“About Margaret?”

Gideon’s smile faded.

“You think Margaret Lark is a person.”

Elena remembered the sealed accounts, the altered records, and the voice that appeared through hospital systems.

“What is she?”

Gideon refused to answer.

Nora’s investigators escorted him from the boardroom.

The remaining directors voted unanimously to remove Vivian, Malcolm, Gideon, and every officer connected to Lark Holdings.

Ethan was offered immediate reinstatement as chief executive.

He declined.

The directors stared at him.

“I spent my life believing this company was my inheritance,” he said. “Now I know it was used to buy children, silence mothers, and protect criminals. I will not lead it until every transaction has been examined.”

He looked at Elena.

“Under Arthur’s trust, the controlling shares will belong to our daughter. Until she is born, the company will be managed by an independent court-appointed team.”

One director protested.

“The market will panic.”

“Then tell the market the truth.”

Ethan walked out of the boardroom with Elena.

Employees watched them cross the corridor.

No one applauded.

There was no dramatic celebration.

Only silence.

But for the first time since returning from London, Ethan did not feel trapped by his family’s name.

In the elevator, Elena leaned against him.

“Are you all right?”

“I just resigned from the company I was raised to inherit.”

“You refused to protect a lie.”

“That sounds better.”

“It is better.”

The elevator reached the ground floor.

Reporters waited outside.

Nora’s security team opened a path.

Before Elena entered the car, her phone rang.

Nathaniel Brooks was calling from county custody.

His charges had been dismissed after investigators discovered that evidence had been planted in his home.

Ethan answered.

“Nathaniel?”

“I heard what happened at the board meeting.”

“We found the trust amendment.”

“Not all of it.”

Ethan stopped.

“My mother mentioned a sealed codicil.”

Nathaniel became silent.

“You need to come to my office,” he said.

“Why?”

“Arthur left instructions concerning the second beneficiary.”

“Is it Mara?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Nathaniel lowered his voice.

“The codicil cannot be opened until Vivian is formally removed from the trust.”

“She was removed today.”

“Then the condition has been satisfied.”

Ethan looked at Elena.

May you like

“What will the codicil tell us?”

“It will tell you why your daughter was never the true target.”
