Chapter 12 - The Hidden Document

Nora canceled the transfer order.
Ethan changed every password associated with his personal, medical, and corporate accounts.
It did not matter.
At 5:40 the next morning, two county officers arrived with a court order.
The document required Elena to undergo emergency psychiatric evaluation at Saint Matthew’s Hospital.
The petition claimed she had attacked medical workers, stolen confidential trust materials, and endangered her unborn child during an unauthorized journey.
Malcolm Cross had filed it.
A judge signed it at 4:58 a.m.
Nora examined the order.
“It appears valid.”
“It’s based on edited evidence,” Ethan said.
“We can challenge it, but not before they transfer her.”
Elena looked at Vivian.
“You said the court would be used against me.”
Vivian nodded slowly.
“Judge Harold Kent is in the notebook.”
Nora found his name.
A payment had been made to a company owned by his brother.
Ethan photographed the page.
“Can this stop the order?”
“Not immediately,” Nora said. “But it gives us leverage.”
Elena suddenly felt a tightening sensation across her abdomen.
Dr. Patel checked her.
“You’re having contractions.”
Ethan’s face changed.
“It’s too early.”
“They may stop. Stress can trigger them.”
The county officers insisted that the court order still applied.
Nora negotiated with their supervisor.
After twenty tense minutes, Elena was allowed to remain at Westbridge under security until a second judge reviewed the case.
Vivian asked to speak with Elena privately.
Ethan refused.
Elena agreed.
“You have five minutes,” she said.
Ethan and Nora remained directly outside the open door.
Vivian approached the bed.
“I am sorry.”
Elena looked at her.
“Which part?”
“All of it.”
“That isn’t specific enough.”
“I am sorry I treated you as an intruder. I am sorry I believed control was the same as protection. I am sorry I let my fear become your prison.”
Elena heard sincerity in her voice.
But sincerity did not erase forged signatures, secret transports, or the hand Vivian had raised against her before.
“Tell the police everything,” Elena said.
“I will.”
“Not only what protects Ethan. Everything.”
Vivian nodded.
She placed her handbag on the chair.
“I brought the original custody packet Malcolm prepared.”
“Why?”
“It proves the court petition was planned before the accident.”
Vivian removed a thick folder.
Then the monitoring machine beeped rapidly.
Elena gripped her belly.
Vivian leaned down.
“What is wrong?”
“Stay away from my child.”
“Elena, I’m trying to help.”
Vivian reached toward her.
Elena recoiled.
The fear in Elena’s eyes seemed to strike Vivian harder than any accusation.
“I would never hurt the baby,” Vivian said.
“You already did.”
Vivian’s shame turned to anger.
“You ruined this family before you even understood it.”
Elena stared at her.
“No. I stopped obeying you.”
Vivian grabbed Elena’s hair.
Her hand struck Elena’s cheek.
The door flew open.
Ethan entered with Nora, hospital security, Dr. Patel, and the nursing team.
“Get her away from my wife!”
The officers pulled Vivian back.
“She became hysterical,” Vivian said, breathing hard. “I was trying to calm her.”
The monitor released a continuous alarm.
Dr. Patel looked at the screen.
“Yellow Code. Clear the room.”
Nurses surrounded Elena.
One officer lifted Vivian’s handbag from the floor. The bag opened, and the custody folder slid across the tiles.
Ethan picked it up.
The title read Emergency Prenatal Custody Authorization.
It declared Elena mentally incapable.
It transferred permanent guardianship of the baby to the Vale Legacy Trust.
At the bottom was Elena’s forged signature.
Ethan looked at Vivian.
“Why does this document state that my child belongs to the Vale Legacy Trust?”
Vivian’s face turned pale.
“That is not the page I brought.”
A second document fell from the folder.
It contained hospital identification numbers, scheduled payments, and a handwritten instruction.
Once the child is delivered, remove the mother before Ethan learns who the true beneficiary is.
Ethan raised his eyes.
“What true beneficiary?”
Vivian shook her head.
“I’ve never seen that page.”
Behind Ethan, Dr. Patel stopped moving.
She stared at the instruction.
Nora noticed.
“You recognize the handwriting.”
Dr. Patel hesitated.
“I recognize the medical notation.”
“Whose is it?”
Before she could answer, a nurse called from the monitor.
“Elena’s blood pressure is falling.”
Ethan dropped the folder and rushed toward the bed.
Dr. Patel ordered everyone back.
“Prepare an operating room.”
Elena reached for Ethan.
“Don’t let them take her.”
“No one is taking her.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
The nurses began moving the bed.
Nora picked up the hidden document.
At the bottom of the final page was a hospital authorization code.
It belonged to Dr. Marcus Bell.
May you like
But beneath Bell’s code was another signature.
Dr. Sienna Patel.
