Chapter 8 - Every Lie on the Table

After the officers entered, Caleb attempted to regain control.

“This is a private family matter,” he told them. “My mother fell on the stairs.”

The younger officer placed a tablet on the table.

“We have reviewed the recording.”

Caleb looked at Evelyn.

“You recorded me?”

“The house recorded you.”

Martin began presenting the evidence one document at a time.

The first file contained the unauthorized bank transfers.

The second contained Caleb’s loan agreements.

The third held transcripts of conversations with Vanessa Cole and the doctors he had approached.

The fourth contained Evelyn’s competency evaluations, completed independently by three specialists.

“She is fully capable of managing her personal and financial affairs,” Margaret said. “Any petition claiming otherwise would be fraudulent.”

Caleb turned toward Dr. Price’s unsigned report.

“He was concerned about her memory.”

Martin opened a sworn statement.

“Dr. Price has confirmed that you pressured him to change his findings.”

Caleb’s breathing became uneven.

He pointed at Evelyn.

“She promised that company to me.”

Jonathan’s will was placed in front of him.

The relevant paragraph had been highlighted.

The company shares were held in a protected trust controlled by Evelyn. Caleb had been named as a future beneficiary only under specific conditions, including responsible financial conduct and the absence of criminal wrongdoing.

Martin tapped the clause.

“Your actions triggered the trust’s misconduct provision.”

“You can’t remove me over an accusation.”

“It is not merely an accusation,” Martin replied. “You signed false loan disclosures, transferred funds without authorization, attempted to manufacture a guardianship claim, and were recorded assaulting the current trustee.”

Caleb slammed both hands on the table.

“I am Jonathan Warren’s son!”

Evelyn finally stood.

“And I was Jonathan Warren’s partner.”

Her voice filled the room.

“You believed the company came from his name. You forgot it also came from my work, my sacrifices, and my decisions.”

Caleb stared at her.

Evelyn touched the scar beneath her eye.

“This is not the mark of my defeat.”

She pushed the red-stamped file toward the officers.

“It is the last mistake you were allowed to make in my house.”
