Chapter 2 - The Son Who Returned Home

Six months earlier, Caleb had returned to the Warren mansion carrying three suitcases, a collection of unpaid bills, and a story about rebuilding his life.

Evelyn had not seen him in nearly two years.

He arrived on a rainy Tuesday evening wearing an expensive navy suit, although the cuffs were worn and the sole of one shoe had begun to separate.

He embraced his mother in the marble entrance hall.

“I should have come sooner,” he said. “After Dad died, I didn’t know how to face this house.”

Evelyn wanted to believe him.

Her husband, Jonathan Warren, had died eleven months earlier after a sudden illness. They had built Warren Agricultural Equipment together from a rented warehouse, eventually turning it into one of the largest privately owned manufacturing companies in the state.

Although Jonathan had been the public face of the company, Evelyn had designed its earliest accounting systems, negotiated its first bank loan, and personally managed the payroll when they could barely afford electricity.

But after Jonathan’s death, people began treating Evelyn as though she were merely the widow of a successful man.

Caleb understood that weakness immediately.

At first, he was attentive.

He drove her to medical appointments, brought her tea in the library, and listened while she spoke about Jonathan.

He told the household staff that he had returned to protect his mother.

Within weeks, however, he began making changes.

He dismissed the longtime gardener, claiming the mansion needed to reduce expenses. He replaced Evelyn’s driver with a younger man loyal to him. He instructed the kitchen staff to send all household invoices to his private office.

When Evelyn questioned him, Caleb smiled.

“You shouldn’t worry about financial details anymore.”

“I managed financial details before you were born,” Evelyn replied.

Caleb kissed her forehead.

“And now you deserve to rest.”

The words sounded gentle, but his eyes were cold.

He soon occupied Jonathan’s former office.

Then he began sitting at the head of the dining table.

By the end of the second month, Caleb no longer behaved like a guest who had returned home.

He behaved like the mansion already belonged to him.
