Chapter 3 - The Missing Accounts

Evelyn first noticed the missing money because of a hospital donation.

Every year, she and Jonathan contributed two hundred thousand dollars to the children’s rehabilitation wing at St. Matthew’s Medical Center.

When the hospital director called to thank her for reducing the donation to twenty thousand dollars, Evelyn assumed there had been a mistake.

She entered Jonathan’s office while Caleb was away at a business lunch.

The room smelled of his cologne.

Jonathan’s family photographs had been removed from the shelves. In their place stood framed pictures of Caleb at private clubs, on yachts, and beside expensive cars.

Evelyn opened the bottom drawer of the desk.

It was locked.

She found the spare key hidden behind an old dictionary, exactly where Jonathan had kept it for thirty years.

Inside the drawer were bank statements.

Large transfers had been made from the Warren household account to a consulting company called CW Strategic Holdings.

The company shared Caleb’s initials.

Over four months, nearly nine hundred thousand dollars had disappeared.

Evelyn carried the statements to the dining room that evening.

Caleb arrived late, poured himself a glass of wine, and barely looked at them.

“What is CW Strategic Holdings?” she asked.

“A temporary investment vehicle.”

“Why is it receiving money from my personal account?”

“Our account,” Caleb corrected.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“No. My account.”

Caleb placed his glass down.

“I’m trying to protect this family’s future.”

“By transferring money to yourself?”

His expression hardened.

“You don’t understand modern business structures.”

“I understand theft.”

For the first time, Caleb dropped the affectionate performance.

He leaned across the table.

“Be careful, Mother. People might start wondering whether grief has affected your judgment.”

The room became silent.

Evelyn understood the warning.

If she challenged him, he intended to portray her as confused.

That night, she began keeping a private record of every missing statement, every altered invoice, and every conversation.

She hid the notes inside an old recipe book in the kitchen.

But Caleb had already begun preparing his own plan.
