Chapter 1 - The Sealed Evidence

The piece of roast beef slipped from Caleb Warren’s fingers and landed in the middle of his porcelain plate.

For several seconds, no one moved.

The crystal chandelier above the dining table scattered warm golden light across the cream-colored walls, the polished silverware, and the stacks of legal documents arranged before three elderly attorneys.

Caleb slowly looked from the papers to the two police officers standing in the doorway.

One officer carried a sealed evidence bag. Inside it was a small black memory card copied from the mansion’s stairwell camera.

Caleb pushed his chair back.

“Mother, you can’t do this to me!”

Across the table, Evelyn Warren remained perfectly still.

She wore a burgundy dress, a pearl necklace, and the gold bracelet her late husband had given her on their thirtieth wedding anniversary. A pale scar curved beneath her left eye, but there was no fear in her expression.

Only certainty.

“I already did,” Evelyn said.

Caleb stared at the three lawyers seated at the head of the table.

The oldest attorney, Martin Hayes, opened the red-stamped file in front of him.

“The evidence has been reviewed,” Martin said. “The financial records have been verified, the witnesses have given statements, and Mrs. Warren’s revised estate plan was notarized this afternoon.”

Caleb’s face lost its color.

“What revised estate plan?”

Martin turned the final page toward him.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Evelyn.

“The Warren family trust no longer lists you as a beneficiary.”

Caleb reached for the document, but one of the lawyers pulled it away.

“You manipulated her,” Caleb shouted. “She doesn’t understand what she signed.”

Evelyn gently placed her crystal glass on the table.

Her hand did not shake.

“I understand every word.”

The officers stepped closer.

Caleb looked toward the staircase, then toward the side door leading to the garden. His arrogance disappeared, replaced by the desperate calculations of a man searching for an escape.

One officer blocked the doorway.

Evelyn’s voice remained quiet.

“You told me I should continue being useful.”

Caleb swallowed.

“I didn’t mean it like that.”

“You meant exactly what you said.”

The officer placed the sealed evidence bag beside the legal documents.

Caleb stared at the memory card inside.

At last, he understood.

The camera had recorded everything.
