Chapter 8 - The Truth About Their Marriage

Dean left shortly before midnight.
The apartment became quiet, but the confrontation was not over.
Ethan sat at the kitchen table while Tessa and Marlene gathered the clothes from the hallway.
He repeatedly tried to speak, but Tessa told him to wait.
For years, she had allowed him to interrupt every difficult conversation. That night, she wanted silence until she understood what she intended to say.
When the last suitcase was returned to the bedroom, Tessa sat across from him.
“Show me everything,” she said.
Ethan frowned.
“Everything about what?”
“The broker. The loan. The business. All of it.”
He resisted for nearly an hour.
Then he opened his laptop.
Tessa discovered unpaid credit cards, personal loans, and messages in which Ethan had promised Dean that they would soon have access to enough money to launch a company.
He had described the apartment as an asset they could leverage.
He had also told Dean that Tessa was too cautious to understand business and would agree once the paperwork was ready.
The betrayal was not one sudden act.
It was a chain of decisions.
Each one had been made behind her back.
Tessa photographed the documents and emailed copies to herself.
Ethan began to cry.
It was the first time she had seen him cry since their wedding.
“I was trying to become someone you could respect,” he said.
Tessa felt sympathy, but sympathy no longer erased reality.
“I respected you when you worked temporary jobs,” she replied. “I respected you when you had nothing. I stopped respecting you when you decided my work belonged to you.”
“I can fix this.”
“You didn’t apologize until you lost control.”
Ethan covered his face.
Marlene waited in the living room, giving them privacy.
By sunrise, Tessa had made her decision.
She told Ethan to stay with a friend while they separated.
He protested, but she did not argue.

She simply placed a packed bag beside the door.
This time, the suitcase did not belong to her.
