Chapter 4 - A Guest Who Behaved Like an Owner

Dean arrived on a rainy Thursday evening with six bags, a gaming console, and no return ticket.

He walked through the apartment as though he were inspecting a property he planned to buy.

“This place is smaller than Ethan described,” he said.

Tessa forced a smile.

“It’s New York.”

Dean entered the bedroom and placed his bags beside the dresser.

Tessa looked at Ethan.

“What is he doing?”

Ethan avoided her eyes.

“Dean has trouble sleeping on couches.”

“So do I.”

Dean laughed as though she had made a joke.

Within three days, the apartment no longer felt like Tessa’s home.

Dean stayed awake until morning playing games. He left dirty dishes on the coffee table, used Tessa’s expensive shampoo, and invited strangers over without asking.

When she complained, Ethan defended him.

“He’s going through a difficult time.”

When she asked Dean to lower the volume, Ethan accused her of humiliating his brother.

When she reminded them that she had an important presentation, Ethan told her she was becoming controlling.

Dean did not apply for jobs.

Instead, he spent his afternoons talking about business ideas with Ethan. They planned a delivery service, a home-repair app, and an online store that never moved beyond conversation.

One evening, Tessa returned from work and found Dean sitting at the kitchen table with her financial folders open in front of him.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

Dean leaned back.

“Ethan said you might have enough savings to help us launch something.”

Tessa closed the folders.

“My savings are not available.”

Dean smirked.

“You married into a family. You can’t keep acting like everything is yours.”

The words sounded too familiar.

That night, Tessa confronted Ethan.

Instead of apologizing, he accused her of disrespecting Dean.

“My brother is trying to build something,” Ethan said. “You could support us instead of treating us like children.”

Tessa looked at the man she had married and realized he had begun speaking about her salary as though it belonged to him.

But her concerns, her work, and even her bedroom belonged to everyone else.
