Ethan’s construction company never opened.

There was always a reason.

One month, a potential partner disappeared. The next month, the cost of equipment was too high. Later, Ethan claimed the market was wrong and that intelligent businessmen knew when to wait.

While he waited, Tessa’s career advanced.

She became a senior coordinator and began managing major commercial projects. Her salary increased, and so did her responsibilities. She paid the mortgage, utilities, insurance, and most of the groceries.

Ethan contributed when he could, but his payments became less frequent.

Whenever Tessa tried to discuss money, he became defensive.

“You act like I’m doing nothing,” he would say.

“I’m asking when you’ll be paid.”

“You sound exactly like your mother.”

That sentence always ended the conversation.

Marlene had never trusted Ethan’s endless promises, but she respected Tessa’s choice. She rarely criticized him directly. Instead, she asked practical questions.

Was Ethan working?

Was he helping with expenses?

Was Tessa getting enough sleep?

Tessa often changed the subject.

She told herself marriage required patience. She believed Ethan was struggling with disappointment and needed encouragement rather than pressure.

Then Ethan’s younger brother, Dean, began calling.

Dean lived in Ohio and moved from job to job. He had recently broken up with his girlfriend and claimed he needed a new beginning.

At first, Ethan said Dean would visit for one weekend.

Then it became two weeks.

After that, Ethan announced that Dean might stay for several months while looking for work.

Tessa objected.

Their apartment had one bedroom and a tiny office where she often worked late at night. There was no guest room.
