Chapter 1 - I Brought the Deed

The narrow hallway had never felt so crowded.
Clothes spilled from two open suitcases. Tessa’s books lay face-down across the wooden floor, their pages bent beneath shoes and work folders. Her favorite gray sweater hung from the handle of the bedroom door as though someone had tossed it there without a second thought.
Ethan stood near the apartment entrance in his burgundy hoodie, pointing toward the tiny office at the end of the hall.
“You’ll sleep in there until Dean leaves,” he said. “This discussion is over.”
Tessa held her brown handbag against her chest. Her eyes burned, but she refused to cry in front of him.
“You emptied my drawers,” she said. “You threw my clothes into the hallway.”
“It’s my brother’s first time in New York. He needs a proper room.”
“And I’m your wife.”
Ethan stepped closer, his face hardening.
“Shut your mouth and stay out of men’s business.”
The words seemed to suck every trace of warmth from the apartment.
Then a calm voice came from the doorway.
“Did you just call this men’s business?”
Ethan turned.
Tessa’s mother, Marlene, stood inside the apartment wearing a cream floral cardigan. She looked at the suitcases, the scattered clothes, and the secondhand couch that Dean had already pushed into the bedroom.
Her expression did not change.
Ethan lowered his hand.
“This is a private conversation.”
Marlene walked past him and stopped beside her daughter.
“No,” she replied. “It became my business the moment you started throwing Tessa’s belongings out of a room she paid for.”
Ethan laughed once, but there was uncertainty behind it.
“You don’t know anything about our finances.”
Marlene opened her purse.
“You’re right.”
She removed a folded legal document.
“That is why I brought evidence.”
Tessa stared as her mother unfolded the paper. A blue seal was visible near the bottom, followed by two signatures.
Ethan’s face lost its color.
Marlene held the deed between them.
“Your wife isn’t leaving this apartment,” she said. “But someone else is.”
For the first time that night, Ethan said nothing.

His eyes moved from the document to Tessa, then toward the bedroom where his brother was waiting.
And Tessa finally understood that her mother had been keeping a secret.
