Chapter 9 - The Grandmother Who Chose the Money

Lena ran before anyone could stop her.

She reached the staircase as Vivian carried Ava from the nursery.

Mrs. Ellis followed, crying and holding one side of her head.

The masked man, now revealed as one of Vivian’s hired guards, blocked the upper landing.

“Give me my baby,” Lena said.

Vivian held Ava more tightly.

The child’s face was red from crying.

“You destroyed everything,” Vivian said.

“You helped create a fraudulent company in her name.”

“I created a future for her.”

“You created debt.”

“I created leverage.”

Federal vehicles broke through the outer gate.

The guard looked toward the windows.

Vivian continued down the stairs.

“You think those officers came to protect you? Halcyon summoned them to protect the vault.”

“Hand Ava to Mrs. Ellis.”

“No.”

Grant entered the entrance hall behind Lena.

“Mother, give her the baby.”

Vivian laughed.

“You have spent your entire life begging me to solve your mistakes. Now you pretend to have principles?”

“This has gone far enough.”

“It went too far the moment you lost eleven million dollars.”

Several relatives appeared in the upper corridor, having hidden in guest rooms during the intrusion.

Their shocked expressions told Lena that most had not understood the extent of Vivian’s plan.

Vivian reached the final step.

“Open the front doors,” she ordered.

The guard moved toward them.

Marcus blocked him.

Noah remained near the study, speaking on the protected phone.

“Federal agents are entering the property,” he announced.

Vivian looked at the baby.

“You do not know what Ava is worth.”

Lena felt cold.

“She is not worth anything. She is a child.”

“To you, perhaps.”

Grant moved beside Lena.

“What did Rook promise you?”

Vivian’s eyes flickered.

Grant understood.

“He offered you control of Crown Meridian.”

“He offered this family restoration.”

“He used you.”

“He recognized my value.”

“He recognized your greed.”

Vivian slapped Grant.

The sound echoed through the hall.

Ava screamed.

Lena moved forward.

Vivian backed away and nearly slipped on the wet marble where rain had blown through the damaged doors.

“Stay back.”

“Look at Ava,” Lena said.

Vivian glanced down.

“She is frightened because you are holding her while men break into her home.”

“I am her grandmother.”

“You are the woman who tried to take her from a hospital nursery.”

“I knew you would turn her against us.”

“She is nine days old.”

“And already she controls more wealth than any of us.”

“There it is,” Lena said. “That is all you see.”

Agents entered through the side corridor.

The guard raised his hands.

Vivian turned toward the front doors, but Grant stepped into her path.

“Give Ava to Lena.”

“You have no authority over me.”

“No. But I can tell them everything.”

Vivian’s confidence faltered.

Grant spoke loudly.

“My mother supervised the forged documents. She arranged the false medical declaration. She gave Celeste’s ledger to a representative of Crown Meridian.”

Vivian stared at him.

“You signed the loan.”

“I did.”

“You stole from investors.”

“I did.”

“You will go to prison.”

“Maybe.”

Grant’s voice shook, but he did not move.

“You told me I was saving our family. You were selling my daughter.”

Vivian looked around.

Relatives avoided her gaze.

The federal agents approached.

For one second, Lena feared Vivian might run with Ava.

Instead, Ava’s small hand emerged from the blanket and wrapped around Vivian’s necklace.

The chain broke.

A small metal pendant fell to the floor.

Noah stared at it.

The divided crown.

A second key.

Vivian looked down.

Lena used the distraction.

She stepped forward and took Ava from Vivian’s arms.

Vivian tried to hold on, but Grant seized his mother’s wrists.

Lena moved behind the agents and pressed Ava against her chest.

The baby’s crying slowly softened.

An agent picked up the pendant.

“This opens the second lock,” Noah said.

Vivian stopped struggling.

Everyone turned toward him.

“What second lock?” Lena asked.

Noah looked toward the cellar.

“The East Vault requires three conditions.”

“The key, the trustee and my biometric verification.”

“That opens the outer door,” Noah replied. “Celeste never told us what opens the inner one.”

Vivian’s expression gave away the answer.

The pendant in the agent’s hand.

Lena looked down at Ava.

The child was safe.

May you like

But Crown Meridian’s people had not come only for the brass key.

They had come for both.
