Chapter 13 - Vivian’s Bargain at Midnight

Vivian asked to see Lena before speaking to investigators.

Her attorney proposed an agreement: Vivian would disclose the location of the deposit box and explain the hospital bracelet in exchange for protection from the most serious financial charges.

Lena had no authority to grant immunity.

Mara did.

But Mara allowed Lena to attend the interview.

Vivian entered the room wearing a gray detention uniform. Her hair, normally immaculate, had been pulled into a simple knot.

She sat across from Lena.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Vivian smiled faintly.

“You have Celeste’s expression.”

“That never sounded like an insult until you said it.”

Vivian leaned back.

“You think she loved you unconditionally.”

“She protected me.”

“She used you.”

“Grant used me.”

“My son is weak. Celeste was not.”

Lena placed the hospital bracelet on the table.

“Explain this.”

Vivian’s confidence weakened.

“Where did you find it?”

“Grant kept it.”

“No. I gave it to Rook.”

“Then Rook gave it to Grant.”

Vivian studied the bracelet.

“That belonged to Evelyn.”

“Celeste’s missing daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know her?”

Vivian looked toward the observation window.

Mara’s voice came through the speaker.

“Answer the question.”

“I saw her once.”

“When?” Lena asked.

“Twenty-seven years ago.”

“That would have made Evelyn four.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“At Arden House.”

Lena’s breath caught.

“The missing child returned?”

“Only for one night.”

“Why did Celeste hide her again?”

“She did not have a choice.”

“Who brought Evelyn?”

Vivian folded her hands.

“Elias Voss.”

Noah had explained that Elias was already dead, but his son Daniel remained connected to Crown Meridian.

“What did he want?”

“Celeste’s voting certificate.”

“Did she give it to him?”

“No. She gave him a false copy.”

“And Evelyn?”

“Elias took her away.”

“You watched a child being kidnapped?”

“I was twenty-two.”

“You could have called the police.”

“My father worked for Elias.”

“Who was your father?”

Vivian looked directly at Lena.

“Arthur Rook.”

Lena understood.

Rook was not simply a title.

It had begun as a family name.

“Your father helped Crown Meridian.”

“He built its security network.”

“And you married into the Arden family.”

“At his instruction.”

Grant’s entire family line had been positioned near Celeste.

“Did you marry Grant’s father to spy on my grandmother?”

“Yes.”

The admission landed without emotion.

“Did Grant know?”

“No.”

“Did your husband?”

“He discovered the truth shortly before his death.”

Grant’s father had died in a boating accident twelve years earlier.

Lena remembered Vivian refusing an autopsy.

“Was his death an accident?”

Vivian looked away.

Mara’s voice sharpened.

“Answer.”

“I did not kill him.”

“That was not the question,” Lena said.

Vivian’s eyes hardened.

“He confronted my father. The next morning, his boat was found empty.”

Lena thought of Grant growing up beneath Vivian’s control.

It did not excuse him.

But it explained why fear and secrecy had seemed normal to him.

“Where is Evelyn now?” Lena asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You said you would explain the deposit box.”

“The box contains Evelyn’s photograph and Celeste’s final letter.”

“To whom?”

“To Ava.”

“Ava was not born when Celeste died.”

“Celeste did not need to know the date of her birth.”

“Stop speaking in riddles.”

Vivian leaned forward.

“Evelyn returned a second time.”

“When?”

“The night Celeste died.”

Lena’s throat tightened.

Celeste had died in her sleep, according to the official report.

“She came to the house?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see her?”

“No. The east-wing camera recorded her.”

“What happened to the footage?”

“Celeste placed it in the deposit box.”

“Why did you take it?”

“Because the video proves Celeste was not alone when she died.”

Lena stood so quickly that her chair struck the wall.

“Who was with her?”

Vivian looked at the observation window.

“I want the agreement signed first.”

Mara entered the room.

“You have not provided enough for immunity.”

Vivian laughed.

“Then you will never open the inner vault.”

“We have both keys.”

“No. You have symbols shaped like keys.”

“What opens it?” Lena demanded.

May you like

Vivian turned toward her.

“Evelyn’s heartbeat.”
