Chapter 11 - The Child Celeste Removed from History
The DNA statement led Lena back to a secret her family had buried before she was born.
Noah arranged a meeting at Halcyon’s offices, a quiet stone building near the river.
The financial investigator introduced herself as Mara Quinn.
She placed three files on the table.
“The first contains Crown Meridian’s public history,” Mara said. “The second contains the history Celeste Arden documented. The third concerns the unidentified child.”
Lena opened the second file.
Crown Meridian had begun as a private investment partnership founded by Celeste’s father, Henry Arden, and his business partner, Elias Voss.
After Henry died, Elias transferred several assets away from the Arden family using forged board approvals.
Celeste spent decades recovering portions of the company quietly.
“She could have gone to court,” Lena said.
“She tried,” Mara replied. “Witnesses disappeared. Records were destroyed. One prosecutor died before filing charges.”
Noah opened the third file.
Inside was a copy of a birth certificate with most details blacked out.
The child had been born thirty-one years earlier.
Five years before Lena.
Mother: Celeste Arden.
Father: Sealed.
Lena stared at the page.
“My grandmother had another child?”
“According to the record,” Mara said.
“That would make the child my aunt or uncle.”
“Yes.”
“Why did no one know?”
“The infant was removed from the hospital within hours of birth. Celeste reported a kidnapping, but the complaint vanished from police records.”
Lena felt the room tilt.
“Was the child found?”
“We do not know.”
“Then how can the beneficiary share my DNA?”
Mara placed a modern genetic report beside the birth certificate.
“Someone accessed a private genealogy database three months ago and matched closely to a sample stored under Celeste’s infant trust.”
“Who?”
“The identity was hidden behind a court seal.”
“Can you break it?”
“Not without evidence of immediate danger or permission from the person.”
Noah turned a page.
“The original infant trust held Crown Meridian voting rights.”
Mara nodded.
“Celeste created the trust after the child disappeared. She believed Elias Voss had arranged the kidnapping to control the ownership line.”
Lena thought of Mr. Rook.
“Is Rook connected to Voss?”
“We believe Rook is a title, not a name. Crown Meridian assigns chess designations to senior operatives.”
“And Grant met one of them.”
“Yes.”
Mara displayed surveillance photographs from the private club.
A man in dark gloves sat across from Grant.
His face was partially visible.
Lena had never seen him before.
Noah, however, went pale.
“You recognize him,” Lena said.
Noah closed the file.
“I knew him many years ago.”
“Who is he?”
“Daniel Voss.”
“Elias Voss’s son?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Daniel was declared dead seventeen years ago.”
Mara studied Noah.
“How did you know him?”
Noah did not answer immediately.
“Celeste and I investigated Crown Meridian together. Daniel offered to testify against his father.”
“What happened?”
“He disappeared the night before the meeting.”
“And now he is calling himself Rook?”
“Either that, or someone wants us to believe he is.”
Lena looked at the photograph.
Grant had claimed Rook knew details about her pregnancy.
Someone had followed her to medical appointments.
Someone had known Ava would inherit the estate.
“Could Daniel be Celeste’s missing child?”
Mara shook her head.
“The dates do not match. Daniel was born two years earlier.”
“Then why would he target the infant trust?”
“Because controlling it could dissolve Crown Meridian or make him its sole owner.”
Noah’s phone rang.
It was the detention facility.
Grant had requested an urgent conversation with Lena.
She refused at first.
