Chapter 8 - The Sale Lena Chose as a Weapon

Grant wanted to obey immediately.
“We give them the key and get Ava back.”
Lena grabbed his wrist before he could leave.
“You created this danger. You do not make the decision.”
“That is my daughter upstairs.”
“She was your daughter when you used her name to borrow twelve million dollars.”
His face twisted.
“You can punish me later.”
“This is not punishment. This is the first responsible decision anyone in your family has made.”
Noah studied the nursery feed.
The masked man remained behind Mrs. Ellis. Ava was crying, but Mrs. Ellis appeared physically unharmed.
“They want the sale and the key,” Noah said. “That suggests selling triggers a change in control, but they still cannot open the vault without us.”
“Then the sale is leverage,” Lena replied.
Grant stared at her.
“You cannot be considering it.”
“They expect me to be emotionally attached to the building.”
“You are.”
“I was.”
Lena looked around the mansion.
Grant had already removed paintings, forged documents and transformed the nursery into a place where her signature was copied.
Arden House held precious memories.
It also held people who believed those memories made Lena weak.
“What happens legally if I accept a sale?” she asked Noah.
“Any fraudulent security interests will be challenged during title transfer. Grant’s private loan will be exposed. The buyer must be informed of the dispute.”
“Can Crown Meridian stop it?”
“They can try.”
“Can they control the purchaser?”
“Possibly.”
“Then choose one they cannot control.”
Noah understood.
“There is a standing cash offer from Halcyon Preservation Trust.”
Grant looked between them.
“What is that?”
“A historic property foundation,” Noah said. “They approached Celeste years ago.”
“Why would they purchase a house with disputed title?”
“Because they know the dispute is fraudulent.”
Lena looked toward the nursery monitor.
“Call them.”
“There is no signal.”
“The landline in my grandmother’s study operates on a separate buried connection.”
Marcus returned from the kitchen.
“The back exits are blocked. Two men are in the courtyard.”
Lena moved toward Celeste’s study.
Grant followed.
“You are walking into exactly what Rook planned.”
“No. Rook planned for me to protect the house.”
“He told me the sale activates the second agreement.”
“And because you said it, I almost refused.”
Grant stopped.
The realization struck him.
“You think he expected me to warn you.”
“Yes. He knew I would distrust you.”
Lena entered the study and lifted the old telephone.
A dial tone sounded.
She called Halcyon’s number from memory because it appeared in Celeste’s estate papers.
A woman answered.
“Halcyon Preservation Trust.”
“This is Lena Arden. I am prepared to accept your standing offer for Arden House.”
The woman did not sound surprised.
“One moment, Mrs. Arden.”
The line transferred.
A familiar male voice answered.
Noah Hale.
Lena turned.
Noah stood in the doorway holding his disconnected mobile phone.
“How are you answering from inside the house?”
“There is more than one protected line.”
“You represented Halcyon?”
“I serve as its legal adviser.”
Grant stepped toward him.
“You arranged the offer.”
“Celeste arranged it six years ago.”
Lena felt betrayed again.
“You knew this could happen.”
“I knew Celeste feared it could happen. I did not know Grant would be reckless enough to make it possible.”
Grant lunged at Noah.
Marcus restrained him.
Noah continued speaking into the landline so the transaction would be recorded.
“Lena, the trust can purchase the property immediately. You will receive fair market value. The estate will then fall under preservation protection while the title issues are resolved.”
“And Ava?”
“Once the sale is recorded, the security filing against the house becomes an attempted claim against protected trust property. That gives federal investigators jurisdiction.”
“You are using the sale to summon them.”
“Yes.”
The nursery monitor made a sound.
The masked man held up a new card.
FIVE MINUTES.
Lena looked at Noah.
“Prepare the documents.”
Grant struggled against Marcus.
“You don’t know what Halcyon really is.”
Noah placed the contract on Celeste’s desk.
“Halcyon is the shield your grandmother built.”
Lena signed.
The final stroke turned downward.
No imitation could match it.
Noah submitted the authorization through the secure terminal.
Across the room, Grant’s phone sounded with an ownership alert.
The masked man upstairs looked at his own device.
For the first time, he appeared uncertain.
Sirens began approaching beyond the estate gates.
The nursery door opened behind him.
Vivian stepped into view.
She was not a hostage.
May you like
She removed the man’s mask.
“Take the child,” she ordered.
