Chapter 9 - the bride who refused to run)

Claire wanted to burn Saint Orison to the ground.

Instead she put on her wedding dress.

The morning of the ceremony dawned bright and violently windy.

Her hairdresser complained that no amount of spray could fight mountain gusts.

Claire barely heard her.

She stood beside the window holding the silver key beneath her robe.

Her mother had carried it.

Vanessa wanted it.

Richard feared it.

Someone had kidnapped Thomas for it.

And now someone wanted Lily.

That changed the rules.

Ethan entered quietly.

He was already dressed in his tuxedo.

"You shouldn't see the bride."

Claire looked at him.

"I think superstition has lost jurisdiction over today."

He smiled faintly.

Then grew serious.

"Marcus doubled the perimeter."

"And Lily?"

"Safe."

"Has anyone followed my sister?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Claire nodded.

"Then we do this."

Ethan stepped closer.

"We can still walk away."

"From the wedding?"

"From all of it."

"The chamber?"

"Saint Orison. My father. The investigation."

Claire touched his face.

"Could you?"

He did not answer.

"Neither could I."

A knock came at the door.

Marcus entered.

"We have a problem."

He held up a photograph printed on ordinary paper.

It showed Lily.

The real Lily.

Sleeping.

Claire's knees almost failed.

"When was this taken?"

"Timestamp says forty minutes ago."

"That's impossible."

Ethan grabbed his phone.

Marcus stopped him.

"I already called."

"And?"

"Your sister says Lily is still there."

Claire looked at the photograph.

The blanket.

The stuffed rabbit.

It was the secure house.

Someone had been inside.

"Move her."

"They're moving now."

"Where?"

"I'm not telling anyone."

"Good."

Claire gripped the edge of the table.

"We cancel."

Ethan looked at her.

"We cancel everything."

Marcus shook his head.

"That may be what they want."

Claire turned on him.

"I don't care."

"You should."

"Someone reached my daughter."

"And then left without taking her."

Claire stared.

Marcus continued.

"They wanted proof. They wanted you afraid."

"Congratulations to them."

"Why not take Lily?"

No one answered.

Marcus lowered the photograph.

"Because they still need you to do something willingly."

Claire looked at the silver key.

Open the chamber.

The wedding continued.

Guests arrived under heavy security.

Richard Ashford appeared shortly before noon.

Claire confronted him near the chapel.

"Someone got into the safe house."

His face drained.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"Is Lily safe?"

"For now."

Richard looked genuinely frightened.

Claire studied him.

"You didn't do it."

"No."

For the first time, she believed him.

"Then help me."

Richard looked toward Ethan.

After a long silence he removed a thin silver chain from beneath his shirt.

A key hung from it.

Claire stared.

"You said Daniel took it."

"He did."

"Then how do you have it?"

"He returned it."

"When?"

"The night he disappeared."

Ethan stepped closer.

"You lied."

Richard looked at his son.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Daniel made me promise."

Claire felt the world narrow.

"Promise what?"

Richard closed his fist around the key.

"That if he failed to expose the people involved, I would keep the chamber closed until Eleanor's daughter came looking for it."

Claire almost could not speak.

"My mother knew?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you spend years trying to find her key?"

"Because after Eleanor died, I changed my mind."

"Why?"

Richard looked toward the cliff.

"Because I learned what was really inside."

Before Claire could ask, the sound of breaking glass came from the reception hall.

People shouted.

Marcus ran toward them.

"Lock the courtyard!"

Security moved instantly.

Claire turned.

A woman in a red dress stood at the far end of the ruins.

Vanessa.

May you like

She smiled.

Then disappeared behind the chapel wall.
