Chapter 4 - the man behind the door)

Claire reached for the panic button.
The overhead light went out.
Darkness swallowed the storage unit.
She pressed the button once.
Then again.
Footsteps moved outside.
Slow.
Unhurried.
Someone tested the metal door.
Claire backed toward the wall.
Her phone had no signal.
She picked up the nearest object she could find.
A brass lamp.
The door began rising.
Light from the hallway entered beneath it.
Shoes appeared.
Black.
Polished.
Claire raised the lamp.
The door lifted higher.
"Don't."
She recognized the voice.
Marcus Bell.
Ethan's security director stood outside with one hand raised.
Claire lowered the lamp slightly.
"What are you doing here?"
"You pressed the emergency button."
"I pressed it after someone closed the door."
Marcus looked down the corridor.
"No one was here when I arrived."
"Someone was."
He entered.
Marcus was in his forties, broad-shouldered and almost unnaturally calm.
Claire had met him dozens of times.
He had always seemed reliable.
Now reliability felt like another word that needed examination.
"How did you get here so fast?"
"I was six minutes away."
"Why?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Mr. Ashford asked me to keep a vehicle nearby."
Claire laughed without humor.
"Of course he did."
She bent and picked up the journal.
Marcus noticed it.
"What did you find?"
"Nothing."
She placed it inside her bag.
"Ms. Monroe."
"Did Richard Ashford send you?"
"No."
"Did Ethan?"
"Only to make sure you were safe."
"Then let's keep our relationship simple. You make sure I'm safe. I decide what I tell you."
Marcus nodded.
As they left, Claire noticed something on the floor outside the unit.
A red thread.
She picked it up.
It looked like fabric.
Vanessa had worn a red wool coat.
Claire said nothing.
At her sister's apartment, Lily was asleep.
Claire sat at the kitchen table and read her mother's journal from beginning to end.
Eleanor Monroe had worked as a financial records specialist for the Ashford Foundation before becoming a teacher.
Saint Orison had been one of the foundation's preservation projects.
But millions of dollars had moved through shell organizations attached to the restoration.
Daniel Rowe discovered sealed rooms beneath the ruins.
According to the journal, those rooms contained artwork and historical objects supposedly lost during wartime.
Richard Ashford had secretly arranged their sale.
Daniel threatened to expose him.
Eleanor helped Daniel copy financial records.
Three days later Daniel disappeared.
A month later Eleanor resigned.
Six months later her car left an icy road.
Claire had always been told it was an accident.
The journal suggested otherwise without ever making a direct accusation.
The final pages mentioned a key hidden in something "Claire would keep because she thinks it is ugly."
Claire stared at the sentence.
Ugly.
She remembered something.
A music box.
Blue porcelain.
Covered in painted roses Claire had hated as a child.
She had seen it in the storage unit.
She called Ethan.
He answered immediately.
"Claire?"
"Meet me at the storage facility."
"Are you okay?"
"Just come."
Twenty minutes later they stood together inside the unit.
Claire opened the music box.
Its melody sounded weak and warped.
She removed the velvet tray.
Nothing.
Ethan examined the base.
"There's a seam."
He pressed the underside.
A hidden panel released.
Inside lay a small silver key.
Both of them stared at it.
Claire felt vindicated and terrified at once.
"My mother was telling the truth."
Ethan's face hardened.
"About the key."
"What else would she lie about?"
"I didn't say she lied."
"You were about to."
"No."
Claire put the key in her pocket.
Ethan reached for her wrist.
"Don't take that home."
"Why?"
"Because if Vanessa knows about it, others might."
"Others like your father?"
Ethan released her.
"Yes."
The admission settled between them.
Claire studied him.
"You believe he could hurt us."
Ethan looked toward the corridor.
"I believe my father has spent his entire life making problems disappear."
"People?"
Ethan met her eyes.
"I don't know."
Claire looked at the silver key.
"Then we're going to Saint Orison."
"No."
"Yes."
"The wedding is in five weeks."
"I'm not talking about the wedding."
She closed the music box.
"I'm talking about whatever my mother died protecting."
Ethan's phone rang.
Richard.
This time Claire answered it before Ethan could stop her.
"Hello, Richard."
Silence.
Then his smooth voice.
"Claire."
"We need to talk."
"I agree."
"About Saint Orison."
Another silence.
Longer this time.
Finally Richard said, "Whatever you've found, don't take it there."
Claire looked at Ethan.
May you like
"How do you know I found something?"
The call disconnected.
