Chapter 14 - the sister erased from history)

The police took Helena into custody.
She did not resist.
That frightened Claire more than if she had fought.
Vanessa, still wearing her own red dress, stood several yards away with Daniel.
Two women in red.
One had tried to uncover the truth.
The other had nearly killed a child.
Claire wondered how many times she had confused them.
How many clues had belonged to different people.
Lily was examined by paramedics.
She was frightened but physically unharmed.
Claire refused to let her go.
Not even when federal investigators asked questions.
Not even when Richard tried to speak.
Finally, inside a locked room at the lodge, Claire sat with Lily asleep against her chest while Ethan, Richard, Daniel, Vanessa and two federal agents faced one another.
"Start at the beginning," Claire said.
Richard did.
Eleanor Monroe and Helena Vale had been half-sisters.
Their mother had left Helena with the Vale family and raised Eleanor separately after a bitter inheritance dispute.
They grew up knowing of one another but rarely meeting.
When Eleanor began working for the Ashford Foundation, Helena was already involved with the Saint Orison restoration project.
"So my mother knew Helena was alive."
"Yes," Richard said.
"Why did everyone tell me Mom was an only child?"
"Eleanor requested it."
"Why?"
Richard looked toward Daniel.
Daniel answered.
"Because Helena became dangerous."
Helena had discovered the hidden archive years before Daniel.
But instead of exposing it, she used information from it.
Blackmail.
Political favors.
Corporate secrets.
She built an invisible network.
Eleanor discovered what she was doing.
Daniel helped her gather evidence.
"And you?" Claire asked Richard.
Richard looked ashamed.
"I helped hide financial transfers."
"For Helena?"
"At first I didn't know who controlled them."
"When did you find out?"
"The year Daniel disappeared."
Daniel continued.
"We planned to release everything. Eleanor had copies. I had names."
"What happened?"
"Helena found out."
Vanessa looked at her brother.
"Did she try to kill you?"
"Yes."
"Did she kill Eleanor?"
Daniel looked at Richard.
Richard closed his eyes.
Claire's voice became quiet.
"Tell me."
Daniel answered.
"Helena arranged the accident."
Claire stopped breathing.
Ethan reached toward her.
She moved away.
Not from him.
From everyone.
Her mother had not died because a road was icy.
She had been murdered.
"Why wasn't Helena arrested?"
Richard said, "We couldn't prove it."
"You had an archive filled with evidence."
"Evidence implicating hundreds of people."
"So you protected them."
"I protected Ethan."
Claire stared.
Richard continued.
"Helena threatened my family. My company. Everyone connected to me."
"So you buried it."
"Yes."
"And Daniel?"
Daniel answered.
"I disappeared because Helena believed I had died during our confrontation."
"You let Vanessa suffer for seventeen years."
Tears filled his eyes.
"Yes."
Vanessa turned away.
Claire looked at Ethan.
"And you?"
He looked devastated.
"Before we met, I knew Eleanor had worked for my family. I knew there had been an investigation."
"Did you know she was murdered?"
"No."
"Did you know Helena existed?"
Ethan hesitated.
"Not by that name."
Claire stared.
"What name?"
"My father called her H."
Richard looked at him sharply.
Ethan continued.
"When I was twenty-two, I overheard him talking about someone who threatened our family. That's all."
Claire looked down at Lily.
The child's tiny hand was curled against the lace of Claire's gown.
"Why did Helena want Lily?"
Daniel answered.
"Because Eleanor's key wasn't the only thing she left you."
Claire frowned.
"What else?"
"Ownership."
"Of what?"
"Saint Orison."
Richard looked surprised.
Daniel continued.
"The land didn't legally belong to the Ashfords."
Vanessa stared.
"It belonged to our grandmother."
"Yes."
"And after she died?"
"Half passed to Eleanor."
Claire felt dizzy.
"My mother owned part of Saint Orison."
"Yes."
"Then I inherited it."
Daniel nodded.
"And Lily inherits after you."
Claire looked at her daughter.
Everything became clear.
The wedding.
The legal trusts.
The property.
Helena had not simply wanted a key.
She wanted the legitimate heirs removed.
"She was going to kill us."
Daniel said nothing.
He did not need to.
Outside, sirens filled the mountain road.
Claire looked at Ethan.
"Our wedding."
He gave a tired laugh.
"I think the ceremony may have experienced a scheduling issue."
For the first time that day, Claire almost smiled.
Three hours later, after statements were taken and Helena was transported under federal guard, Claire stood inside the ruined chapel.
Only twelve people remained.
No photographers.
No musicians.
No elaborate decorations.
Lily stood between Claire and Ethan, holding one flower.
The officiant asked if they wanted to postpone.
Claire looked at Ethan.
There were still lies between them.
Still questions.
Still wounds.
But there was also choice.
For weeks other people had tried to decide where Claire should go, what she should know, whom she should trust and what she should fear.
She was finished allowing them to decide.
"I want to continue."
Ethan looked surprised.
"Claire."
"This isn't forgiveness."
"I know."
"It isn't forgetting."
"I know."
"It's choosing what happens next."
Ethan's eyes filled.
"Then I choose you."
They finished their vows as evening sunlight entered through the broken stone windows.
Lily clapped when they kissed.
Vanessa cried quietly.
Daniel stood beside her.
Richard remained alone at the back of the chapel.
For one brief moment, Claire believed the nightmare had ended.
Then Marcus entered.
His face was white.
He walked directly toward the federal agent.
"Helena never reached the detention vehicle."
Claire turned.
"What?"
"The transport team is missing."
Silence filled the chapel.
Marcus placed something on the altar.
A red envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Claire holding Lily moments after the ceremony.
It had been taken from somewhere inside Saint Orison.

On the back were five words.
Eleanor hid one more thing.
