Chapter 9 - The Verdict
The trial lasted six weeks.
Daniel’s attorneys argued that he had panicked when Maya called. They claimed fear had prevented him from understanding the seriousness of her message.
The prosecution played the hotel footage.
The jury watched Daniel read Maya’s request for help, place the phone down, and pour champagne.
They heard his recorded call asking someone to move money after the funeral.
They saw the forged power of attorney, the false witness signature, the stolen notary seal, and the documents filed while Maya was unable to object.
Celeste accepted a deal in exchange for testimony. She described the fake vendors, secret accounts, hotel meetings, and Daniel’s plan to take full control of Maya’s estate.
She admitted that she knew Maya had not approved the transfers.
She also admitted that she urged Daniel not to leave the hotel immediately because she feared their affair would be discovered.
Daniel showed no emotion during most of the trial.
But when the prosecution played Maya’s final video, he lowered his head.
The jury returned with its decision after less than four hours.
Guilty on every major count.
Daniel was sentenced to decades in prison. Celeste received a reduced but substantial sentence for conspiracy, fraud, and her role in the forged documents.
The court ordered the recovery of every traceable asset.
The Bellweather account contained nearly all the money stolen from Hartwell Home Design. Investigators also recovered properties, vehicles, jewelry, and investments purchased with company funds.
Maya’s home returned to her estate.
Her company shares were restored.
The life insurance policy naming Daniel was invalidated because of fraud connected to its creation. The proceeds went instead to Maya’s designated charitable beneficiaries.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Lena.
“Detective Hart, do you feel justice has been served?”
Lena looked toward the stone courthouse steps.
“Justice does not return the people we lost,” she said. “But it prevents the people responsible from rewriting their story.”
Another reporter asked what would happen to Maya’s company.
