Chapter 1 - The USB at the Funeral

The camera phones came out the moment Detective Lena Hart raised the black USB drive above her head.
Until then, the funeral chapel had been silent except for the soft crackle of candles and the occasional muffled sob. White roses surrounded two closed coffins at the altar: a brown wooden coffin for Maya Hart and a smaller white one tied with a ribbon for the daughter she had never been able to bring home.
Daniel Mercer stood near the back entrance with Celeste Vaughn beside him. He had arrived ten minutes late, dressed in an expensive black suit, wearing the expression of a grieving husband who expected sympathy.
Celeste wore red.
The color was so bright against the white flowers that several mourners turned to stare. She remained close to Daniel, as though she had forgotten that the woman in the coffin had been his wife.
Daniel looked toward Lena and lowered his voice.
“Don’t cause trouble at Maya’s funeral.”
Lena stepped away from the altar. Her navy police uniform was immaculate, her black hair tied neatly behind her head. Her eyes showed no tears now.
She opened her coat and revealed her investigator’s badge.
The chapel fell completely silent.
“Do you really think I wouldn’t find it?” she asked.
Daniel’s practiced expression disappeared.
Lena lifted the USB higher.
“All the calls, messages, bank transfers, and altered documents are stored here.”
Celeste recoiled.
Daniel turned toward the side exit, but two uniformed officers moved in front of the doors.
“You have no right to do this here,” Daniel snapped. “You’re her sister. You’re emotional.”
“That is why I handed the investigation to officers who are not related to Maya.”
Lena nodded once.
The officers approached Daniel and Celeste.
Celeste’s pale face twisted with panic.
“Daniel said Maya signed voluntarily!”
Lena stared directly at her.
“That signature was made after Maya was no longer able to object.”
A wave of shocked whispers spread through the chapel.
Daniel tried to speak, but Lena continued.
“The transfer of Maya’s house, her company shares, her insurance benefits, and the trust created for her baby all carried the same forged authorization.”
“That’s a lie,” Daniel said.
Lena handed the USB to Captain Hayes.
“No, Daniel. Your lies are on the drive.”
The officers secured Daniel and Celeste at a safe distance. Daniel struggled to maintain his dignity, but his voice rose as the mourners began stepping away from him.
Lena turned toward the two coffins.
“Today is not just my sister’s funeral.”
She looked back at Daniel.
“This is the day all your lies are unearthed.”
The chapel doors opened.
As Daniel was escorted outside, he saw something waiting beyond the white roses: three federal investigators, two financial-crimes officers, and Maya’s attorney holding a sealed evidence folder.

For the first time, Daniel understood that Lena had not come to frighten him.
She had come to end him.
