Chapter 5 - The File That Should Not Exist

Two days before the funeral, Maya’s attorney received a package.
There was no return address.
Inside was a blue investigation folder, a small key, and a note written in Maya’s handwriting.
Rose,
Daniel has been moving money through Celeste’s companies. I have copied what I could. If I cannot meet you on Monday, give this to Lena.
Do not trust any document signed after Thursday.
Maya
The key opened a private storage drawer at Maya’s design office.
Inside the drawer was a black USB drive.
Lena, Captain Hayes, Rose Caldwell, and a digital-forensics specialist viewed the contents together.
The first folder contained financial records proving Daniel and Celeste had stolen more than two million dollars from Hartwell Home Design.
The second contained photographs of forged documents.
The third held voice recordings.
Maya had recorded a confrontation with Daniel three nights before her death.
“You transferred money from the baby’s trust,” Maya said.
“I moved it temporarily.”
“You sent it to Celeste.”
“She manages our investments.”
“She manages your hotel reservations.”
Silence followed.
Then Daniel’s voice hardened.
“You are tired. You are confused. You have been emotional for months.”
“I know what I saw.”
“You saw numbers you don’t understand.”
“I built this company before you even knew how to read a balance sheet.”
A chair moved sharply in the recording.
Daniel spoke again.
“If you accuse me publicly, people will think the pregnancy affected your judgment.”
“You mean you’ll tell them I’m unstable.”
“I’ll tell them whatever protects this family.”
“You are not protecting this family. You are stealing from it.”
The recording ended with Maya saying she would meet her attorney on Monday.
She never reached Monday.
The final folder on the USB was encrypted.
The specialist worked through the night to unlock it.
Inside was a video recorded by Maya herself.
She sat in her home office wearing a cream sweater, one hand resting on her pregnant stomach. She looked tired, but her voice was steady.
“My name is Maya Hart Mercer. I am recording this because my husband has forged my signature and taken money from accounts meant for my daughter.”
She held several documents toward the camera.
“If Daniel claims I gave him my company, my home, or control of the baby’s trust, he is lying.”
Maya looked directly into the lens.
“Lena, if you are watching this, I’m sorry. I thought I could fix everything before you found out.”
May you like
She paused.
“And if Daniel brings Celeste to my funeral, arrest them both.”
