Chapter 8 - The Recording in the Chapel

After Lena raised the USB and the officers stopped Daniel, he still tried to control the room.

“This is a performance,” he told the mourners. “She has always hated me.”

Several people looked uncertain.

Daniel had spent years presenting himself as polite, generous, and loyal. Many of Maya’s friends had believed him.

Then Rose Caldwell stepped forward.

“Maya anticipated that response.”

She nodded to the chapel technician.

A screen lowered beside the altar.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You can’t play private material at a funeral.”

Rose ignored him.

Maya appeared on the screen.

She was seated in her office, alive and calm.

“My name is Maya Hart Mercer,” the recording began. “If this video is being shown, Daniel has probably told you I was confused, emotional, or incapable of handling my affairs.”

The mourners turned toward Daniel.

Maya held up the forged documents.

“I did not authorize these transfers. I did not give Daniel my company or my house. I did not appoint Celeste Vaughn as trustee for my daughter.”

Celeste began crying.

Maya continued.

“I also want it known that Daniel and Celeste have been stealing from Hartwell Home Design. The records are attached to this video.”

Daniel lunged one step toward the screen, but the officers restrained him.

“Turn it off!”

Maya’s image remained steady.

“Daniel, if you are watching this, you spent years convincing me that I was imagining what I saw. You called me unstable whenever I asked questions. You made me apologize for discovering your lies.”

Her eyes shone, but she did not look away.

“I am done apologizing.”

The chapel remained silent.

“Lena, protect my daughter’s name. Protect the people whose jobs depend on my company. And do not let Daniel stand beside my coffin pretending he loved me.”

The video ended.

Daniel looked around the chapel for support.

He found none.

Maya’s employees stood together near the back. One by one, they turned their faces away from him.

Celeste pointed at Daniel.

“He planned everything. He told me Maya would never find out.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You signed the documents!”

“Because you said they were already approved!”

“You knew exactly what they were!”

Their accusations echoed through the chapel.

Captain Hayes stepped forward and formally announced the charges under investigation: fraud, conspiracy, evidence tampering, theft, obstruction, and criminal responsibility connected to the delayed emergency call.

Daniel stopped shouting.

The weight of the truth finally silenced him.
