Chapter 11 - the retirement dream

The condominium brochure was glossy.
Water views.
Fitness center.
Concierge desk.
Private balconies.
Vivian had shown it to relatives months earlier.
Elena remembered the conversation.
“When I finally retire properly, I want somewhere peaceful.”
Aunt Marissa had smiled.
“You deserve it.”
Vivian had touched Elena’s hand.
“My daughter keeps telling me to enjoy life.”
Elena had assumed Vivian was dreaming.
She had not realized Elena was financing the dream without being told.
Claire found the deposit.
Then another payment.
Then a furniture order.
Vivian had used Elena’s household account to create a retirement plan while simultaneously telling Cole and an attorney that Elena was incapable of managing money.
Daniel sat in Elena’s office staring at the records.
“This is useful.”
Elena laughed bitterly.
“Useful?”
“For defending you.”
“Great. My mother stealing from me is legally convenient.”
Daniel did not react.
That was one reason Elena liked him.
“We also need to discuss whether you want to pursue recovery.”
“Of the money?”
“Yes.”
Elena looked toward the hallway.
Maya was laughing with Tessa.
Leo was sleeping.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“This is not about revenge.”
“I know.”
“If you ignore potential fraud because she’s your mother, you may create problems later.”
“What problems?”
“If she claims these transfers were gifts, silence can help her narrative.”
Elena frowned.
“So I have to prove I didn’t give her permission to steal from me.”
“You have to establish what happened.”
Elena rubbed her forehead.
“I hate this.”
“I know.”
The doorbell rang.
Andrew was early.
He had brought Leo back from the pediatrician.
“No injury beyond bruising,” he said.
Elena exhaled.
“Thank God.”
Andrew set the carrier down.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“What did you find?”
Elena told him.
He became increasingly quiet.
At the end, he asked, “Do you understand what she was doing?”
Elena stared.
“Stealing.”
“No. Bigger.”
Andrew pointed toward the guardianship documents.
“She was creating a situation where she could say you mishandled your money after the accident.”
Daniel looked interested.
Andrew continued.
“She moves money. She gets you to transfer more. She creates financial chaos. Then she points at the chaos.”
Elena felt cold.
Claire had said something similar days earlier.
Exhaustion had become a strategy.
Maybe confusion had too.
“How many times did she tell you a bill was due when it wasn’t?” Andrew asked.
Elena looked at Claire.
Claire was already typing.
Within two hours they found six duplicate requests.
Vivian had told Elena the home insurance premium was due twice.
The second transfer had gone elsewhere.
She had requested property tax money after the taxes were already paid.
She had claimed the Lexus needed a five-thousand-dollar repair.
The dealership invoice was seventeen hundred.
The remainder disappeared.
Elena sat silently.
She had spent years believing generosity protected relationships.
Instead, generosity without boundaries had taught Vivian that Elena’s money existed to solve every desire.
That night, Aunt Marissa called.
“Elena, what are you doing to your mother?”
Elena almost laughed.
“Which version did you hear?”
“That you threw her out while she was caring for you.”
“She kicked Leo.”
A pause.
“She said she nudged him with her foot.”
“He fell over.”
“Was he hurt?”
“Why does everyone keep asking that as though it changes what she did?”
Marissa sighed.
“Your mother is under pressure.”
“So am I.”
“She gave up months of her life.”
“She also took more than seventy thousand dollars.”
Silence.
“What?”
Elena told her about the condo.
Marissa did not speak for several seconds.
Then she said something Elena did not expect.
“She told us you bought it for her.”
Elena stared at the wall.
“She told you that?”
“At Easter.”
“I didn’t even know she had reserved it.”
“She said it was your retirement gift to her.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Vivian had been preparing two realities at once.
One for Elena.
May you like
One for everyone else.
And until the accounts were frozen, both realities had been paid for by the same person.
