Chapter 10 - what else was inside the folder

The emergency protective order was issued that evening.

Vivian was required to leave the property temporarily.

She had forty minutes to pack essentials.

For the first time in Elena’s life, her mother had nowhere to direct the performance.

Crying did not change the order.

Anger did not change it.

Accusations did not change it.

Even Cole’s phone call did not change it.

“You called the police on Mom?”

“She kicked Leo.”

“She said it was an accident.”

“Maya saw it.”

“Maya is three.”

“I saw it.”

“You’re on pain medication.”

Elena almost admired how quickly Vivian’s language had reached him.

“I haven’t taken narcotic pain medication in seven weeks.”

Silence.

“You didn’t know that, did you?”

“Elena, she’s scared.”

“So was Leo.”

“Where is she supposed to go?”

“You have a guest room.”

Cole stopped talking.

That was the first real crack in the family mythology.

Everyone believed Vivian deserved support.

No one wanted to be the person providing it.

Cole cleared his throat.

“I travel for work.”

“So?”

“My apartment is small.”

“So?”

“She can’t stay with me permanently.”

“I didn’t ask permanently.”

“Elena.”

“What you mean is she was convenient when I was paying for everything.”

He hung up.

Vivian spent the first night at a hotel.

The hotel bill appeared on Elena’s old shared credit card the following morning.

Claire called.

“Do you want me to decline it?”

Elena looked at the ceiling.

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Five minutes later Vivian called twelve times.

Elena did not answer.

Then the text messages began.

YOU ARE ABANDONING YOUR MOTHER.

YOU HAVE NO HEART.

AFTER EVERYTHING I DID.

YOU WILL COME CRAWLING BACK WHEN YOU REALIZE YOU CANNOT HANDLE THOSE CHILDREN.

The last message was different.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU JUST STARTED.

Elena showed it to Daniel.

He saved a copy.

Then he pointed toward the gray folder.

“There’s something I didn’t show you yesterday.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

“I wanted to verify it.”

He removed three pages.

They were bank records from an account Elena did not recognize.

Vivian Morgan appeared as the owner.

Deposits appeared repeatedly.

Small at first.

Then larger.

Elena examined the dates.

“This is when I was in rehab.”

“Yes.”

“What am I looking at?”

Daniel tapped the source of each deposit.

Refund.

Reimbursement.

Insurance adjustment.

Household repayment.

Elena frowned.

“Those were supposed to return to my household account.”

“They didn’t.”

“How much?”

Daniel had already calculated it.

“Thirty-seven thousand eight hundred and sixteen dollars.”

Elena stared.

“My mother took almost thirty-eight thousand dollars?”

“Based on what we found so far.”

“So far.”

Daniel nodded.

“There is also a check.”

He showed her the image.

A check issued to Elena for fourteen thousand two hundred dollars.

It related to reimbursement for accessibility modifications.

The endorsement on the back read Elena Morgan.

Elena knew immediately it was not hers.

She never signed checks that way.

Her signature had a distinctive loop in the M.

This one did not.

“She forged it.”

Daniel answered carefully.

“It appears someone endorsed the check in your name.”

Elena felt physically ill.

The guardianship petition had been bad.

The deed had been worse.

But this was different.

This was no longer entitlement.

This was taking.

“Why?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I think we need forensic accounting.”

Claire arrived an hour later.

By evening, the number was no longer thirty-eight thousand.

It was sixty-one.

By midnight, it was seventy-four.

The following morning Claire found the transfer that changed everything.

Forty thousand dollars.

Sent from Elena’s household account.

Destination listed as home renovation reserve.

But the receiving account did not belong to a contractor.

It belonged to a condominium development outside Annapolis.

Vivian had placed a deposit on a new unit.

May you like

In her own name.

Using Elena’s money.
