Chapter 8 - the photograph beneath the mattress

Daniel arrived at Ethan’s office that afternoon.
He looked tired. His shirt was wrinkled, and he carried a hospital visitor badge in his pocket.
Ethan placed the photograph on the desk without explanation.
Daniel looked at it.
His face did not change, but his breathing did.
“Where did you get this?”
“Beneath Sophie’s mattress.”
Daniel sat down slowly.
“I haven’t seen this in years.”
“You told me you never met Adrian Hale.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire asked me to.”
Ethan remained standing.
“My wife is dead. Adrian disappeared. Vanessa is inside my house, and everyone keeps telling me Claire asked them to lie.”
Daniel looked toward the closed office door.
“Is this room secure?”
“It’s my company.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Ethan touched a control beneath the desk. A signal-blocking system activated, isolating the room from external communications.
Daniel exhaled.
“Claire contacted me six months before the accident. She believed Halcyon money had been moved through accounts connected to the Mercer Foundation.”
“That’s impossible.”
“I thought so too.”
“Who controlled those accounts?”
“Your former chief financial officer, Martin Voss.”
Martin had died in a boating accident four years earlier.
Ethan sat across from Daniel.
“Why didn’t Claire come to me?”
“She did.”
“I would remember.”
“You were recovering from surgery after the warehouse explosion.”
Ethan remembered fragments from that period.
Pain medication.
Hospital walls.
Claire sitting beside him.
Documents he signed without reading because he trusted the people around him.
Daniel continued.
“Claire discovered someone used your authorization while you were hospitalized.”
“To move foundation money?”
“To conceal Halcyon transfers.”
“Was Vanessa involved?”
“Claire believed so.”
“And Adrian?”
“He contacted Claire because he wanted protection.”
“Protection from Vanessa?”
“From whoever Vanessa worked for.”
Ethan pushed the photograph toward him.
“Which man was helping her?”
Daniel looked at the picture.
“Adrian.”
The answer came too quickly.
Ethan noticed.
“Why should I believe you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
Daniel reached into his jacket.
Ethan’s hand moved toward the security alarm.
Daniel slowly removed a small brass key and placed it on the desk.
A metal tag hung from it.
B-19.
Ethan stared at the key.
“Where did you get that?”
“Claire gave it to me the morning she died.”
“You kept it for three years?”
“She told me to wait until Sophie was in danger.”
“You watched Vanessa enter my life.”
“I tried to stop it.”
“How?”
“I changed her background report.”
Ethan stood abruptly.
“You prepared that report.”
“Yes.”
“You told me she was safe.”
“Because the original report disappeared. When I tried to warn you, Martin threatened my mother.”
“Martin was already dead when I met Vanessa.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Then someone wanted us to believe he was dead.”
Ethan thought of Adrian’s empty car beside the bridge.
No body.
A legal declaration.
A convenient ending.
“How many dead men are still alive?” Ethan asked.
Daniel did not answer.
The office lights flickered.
Miles’s voice came through the internal speaker.
“Ethan, we have a breach.”
The computer screens went black.
A message appeared.
STOP LOOKING FOR B-19.
Daniel moved toward the door.
Ethan blocked him.
“You arrive with the key, and our system is attacked.”
“I didn’t do this.”
“Sit down.”
The message vanished.
A live image replaced it.
Sophie was playing in Rachel’s backyard.
The camera angle came from beyond the fence.
Someone was watching her.
Ethan called Rachel.
She answered immediately.
“Bring Sophie inside.”
“What happened?”
“Now.”
Through the live feed, Sophie stopped playing.
She looked directly toward the hidden camera.
A dark vehicle was parked across the street.
Rachel ran into the garden and lifted Sophie.
The vehicle pulled away.
Miles entered the office.
“We traced the signal for twelve seconds. It came through an abandoned Halcyon server.”
Ethan picked up the B-19 key.
“Where is the box?”
Daniel gave him the address.
A private vault beneath the old Union Station.
Ethan turned toward Miles.
“Call Detective Ortiz.”
Miles hesitated.
“You trust her?”
“Claire did.”
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“How do you know that?”
Ethan showed him the handwritten note from the blue file.
At the bottom of the page, beneath Claire’s warning about Vanessa, were three letters Ethan had initially mistaken for a signature.
L.O.R.
Lena Ortiz, Organized Robbery.
Detective Ortiz had investigated Halcyon Trust before the case was abruptly closed.
Ethan placed the photograph, note and B-19 key inside an evidence bag.
“We open the box with the police present.”
Daniel stood.
“If Vanessa learns you found it, she will move Adrian.”
“You said Adrian helped Claire.”
“He did.”
“Then why would Vanessa still need him?”
May you like
Daniel looked at the dark screen showing Sophie’s empty backyard.
“Because Adrian is the only person who knows what really happened the night Claire died.”
