Chapter 11 - the man with silver buckles

Julian Cross had served as Mercer Systems’ chief operating officer since the company’s first major government contract.
He was respected, disciplined and almost invisible outside executive meetings.
He wore black custom shoes with silver buckles.
Ethan had trusted him with company finances, personnel clearances and access to nearly every secure system Mercer owned.
Julian stepped fully into the camera’s view.
Vanessa kissed him.
Ethan watched without reacting.
Betrayal had already become too large for anger.
Miles whispered, “Julian approved the office access reviews.”
“He also hired Martin Voss.”
On-screen, Julian removed a memory drive from his pocket.
“The transfer authorization has to happen during the foundation dinner,” he said.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Ethan signs electronically. We could do it tonight.”
“The foundation network will flag the device.”
“Then change the network.”
“I cannot without exposing the back door.”
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“What about Sophie?”
Julian’s expression tightened.
“You told me she was controlled.”
“She found Claire’s file.”
“Then Claire hid more than we thought.”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Adrian knows where the ledger is.”
“Adrian no longer speaks.”
“He spoke to the nurse last week.”
Julian stepped closer.
“What did he say?”
“One word.”
“What word?”
“North Star.”
Ethan looked at Miles.
Sophie’s trust was registered through North Star Educational Holdings.
The ledger was not merely connected to her inheritance.
It was hidden inside it.
Julian turned away from Vanessa.
“We move Adrian after the dinner.”
“Where?”
“You do not need to know.”
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“You promised this would end.”
“It ends when we control the trust.”
“And if Ethan refuses to sign?”
Julian looked toward the family photographs on the wall.
“Then Sophie gives him a reason.”
Vanessa released him.
Even she appeared disturbed.
“You said no more accidents.”
“I said no unnecessary accidents.”
Ethan shut off the screen.
Miles looked at him.
“We have enough to arrest them.”
“Not the Architect.”
“Julian may be the Architect.”
“He called it a back door. Someone built this system before Julian joined us.”
“Ethan, they are talking about using Sophie.”
“I heard them.”
“Then we act now.”
Ethan opened Claire’s financial records.
North Star Educational Holdings contained hundreds of encrypted documents associated with Sophie’s trust.
Most appeared to be routine legal forms.
One file had been created by Claire three years earlier and never opened.
Its name was STARLIGHT.
Ethan attempted to access it.
The system requested three credentials.
A trustee password.
A physical encryption key.
A biometric voice phrase from the beneficiary.
“Sophie has to open it,” Miles said.
“She is four.”
“Claire designed it that way.”
Ethan called Detective Ortiz.
Within an hour, Sophie, Rachel, Daniel and Mrs. Bell were brought to a secure Mercer Systems facility.
Sophie sat in front of the computer with Ethan beside her.
A small star appeared on the screen.
A recorded video of Claire began playing.
Sophie gasped.
“Mommy.”
Claire smiled from the monitor.
Hello, my little star.
If you are seeing this, you are older than the last time I held you, but I hope you still remember our special words.
Sophie looked at Ethan.
“She sang them.”
“What words?”
Claire’s video continued.
When the night is dark, the stars remember.
Sophie whispered the phrase.
“When the night is dark, the stars remember.”
The biometric system accepted her voice.
The STARLIGHT file opened.
Inside were complete records of every transfer stolen from Halcyon Trust and moved through the Mercer Foundation.
There were names, dates, photographs and private communications.
At the top of the ledger appeared Martin Voss.
Beneath him were Vanessa Hale and Julian Cross.
At the bottom was an encrypted identity labeled ARCHITECT.
Before Miles could open it, the building alarms activated.
Red lights flashed.
A security message appeared.
BIOLOGICAL ACCESS ACCEPTED.
REMOTE PURGE INITIATED.
Miles typed rapidly.
“Someone was waiting for Sophie to open the file.”
“Can you stop it?”
“I can isolate the server, but the command is coming from inside the building.”
Ethan looked toward the security monitors.
One camera showed Vanessa entering the lobby.
She was wearing the black evening dress intended for the foundation dinner.
The dinner was not scheduled until the following night.
Vanessa looked directly into the camera.
Then she lifted her phone and called Ethan.
“You should have left the ledger closed,” she said.
Behind her, the main entrance locked automatically.
The lights went out.
Through the darkness, Sophie’s voice came from the hallway.
“Daddy?”
May you like
Ethan turned.
Her chair was empty.
