Chapter 15 - the man outside the gate

Adrian disappeared from police protection forty-eight hours after being found.
Hospital footage showed a nurse entering his room at 3:07 a.m.
At 3:12, Adrian walked out wearing the nurse’s coat.
He did not appear confused.
He did not appear weak.
He looked directly into the security camera before leaving.
The nurse was later found asleep in an empty office. She remembered a man offering her coffee but could not describe his face.
Detective Ortiz replayed the footage inside Ethan’s study.
“He performed the confusion,” Ethan said.
“Possibly.”
“He named Daniel to distract us.”
“Or because Daniel really was part of the crash.”
“Both can be true.”
Ortiz placed the black envelope inside an evidence bag.
“The photograph could have been taken by Vanessa, Julian or Adrian.”
“Julian is in custody.”
“He had people outside the company.”
Ethan looked toward the garden.
Sophie was playing beneath the trees with Mrs. Bell.
Two security officers watched from opposite sides of the property.
“Why would Adrian leave willingly with Vanessa after she kept him sedated?”
Ortiz did not answer immediately.
“Maybe she didn’t.”
“What does that mean?”
“The medication records were real, but Adrian’s blood tests showed only small amounts of sedatives. Not enough to keep him unconscious for years.”
“He was pretending.”
“Or someone altered the records.”
Ethan turned back toward the photograph.
Vanessa’s reflection appeared in the hospital window.
Behind her stood another person.
Only part of the face was visible.
Ethan enlarged the image.
The man looked older, with gray hair and a scar near his temple.
“Do you recognize him?” Ortiz asked.
“No.”
Sophie entered the study carrying a drawing.
“Daddy, look.”
Ethan quickly turned the photograph facedown.
“What did you draw?”
“Our house.”
The picture showed Ethan, Sophie, Rachel and Mrs. Bell standing inside a circle of stones.
At the gate, Sophie had drawn a tall man.
This one had a face.
Ethan’s smile faded.
“Who is that?”
“The man watching us.”
Ortiz stood.
“What man?”
Sophie pointed toward the front garden.
“He was outside.”
Ethan ran to the window.
A gray-haired man stood beyond the iron gate.
The security officers moved toward him.
The man did not run.
He raised both hands and looked directly at the house.
Ethan hurried outside with Ortiz behind him.
“Stay where you are,” one officer ordered.
The stranger obeyed.
Ethan stopped several yards away.
“Who are you?”
The man looked toward the second-floor window.
Sophie stood behind the glass with Mrs. Bell.
“My name is Samuel Reed.”
Ethan had never heard it.
Ortiz moved closer.
“Identification.”
Samuel reached slowly inside his coat and removed a passport.
Ortiz examined it.
“Why are you here?”
“To speak with Sophie Mercer.”
“No,” Ethan said.
Samuel looked at him.
“Then you will never find Vanessa.”
“You know where she is?”
“I know where she is going.”
“Where?”
Samuel’s attention returned to Sophie.
“She is going back to where this started.”
“Halcyon Trust?”
“No.”
“Claire’s accident?”
Samuel shook his head.
“This began before Claire met you.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“How do you know my wife?”
Samuel’s expression changed.
“I was the investigator Claire hired when she discovered Adrian was following her.”
Ortiz studied him.
“There is no record of a private investigator named Samuel Reed in Claire’s files.”
“Because Samuel Reed is not the name she knew.”
“What name did she know?”
The man reached into his coat again.
The officers raised their weapons.
He stopped.
“It’s a photograph.”
Ortiz removed it herself.
The image showed Claire standing outside a small lakeside cabin.
She held baby Sophie in her arms.
Beside her stood Samuel.
On the back, Claire had written:
For my brother, who promised to protect Sophie if I could not.
Ethan read the sentence twice.
“Claire had no brother.”
“She had no brother you knew about.”
Samuel looked toward the house.
“Sophie is not the only child Vanessa was sent to find.”
Ethan felt the warning beneath the words.
“Who sent her?”
Samuel’s voice lowered.
“The person whose identity is hidden in the ledger.”
“The Architect?”
Samuel smiled without humor.
“That is what Julian called him.”
“Him?”
Samuel looked at Ortiz.
“You still think Vanessa is running because she fears prison.”
“What is she afraid of?” Ortiz asked.
“The same thing Claire feared.”
Samuel’s eyes returned to Ethan.
“That Sophie will remember the night at the cabin.”
“Sophie was a baby.”
“She was nearly two.”
Ethan stared at him.
The timeline was impossible.
Sophie had never been taken to a lakeside cabin.
At least, no one had ever told him.
Samuel pointed toward the photograph.
“Ask her what Claire hid beneath the kitchen floor.”
“We found the blue file.”
“Not that kitchen.”
A phone began ringing.
The sound came from inside Samuel’s coat.
Ortiz removed it and placed the call on speaker.
Vanessa’s voice filled the air.
“Samuel, you should not have gone to the house.”
Samuel closed his eyes.
Ethan stepped toward the phone.
“Where are you?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Closer than you think.”
“What do you want?”
“I want what Claire stole.”
“The ledger?”
“No.”
Sophie appeared at the front door before Mrs. Bell could stop her.
She stared at Samuel.
Her face became pale.
Ethan moved toward her.
“Soph, go inside.”
She did not hear him.
She pointed at Samuel with a trembling hand.
“That’s him.”
Ethan turned.
“The man outside your window?”
Sophie shook her head.
“The man under the floor.”
Samuel’s expression changed.
Vanessa stopped laughing on the phone.
Sophie took one step back.
“He was talking to Mommy.”
Samuel whispered, “She remembers.”
The call disconnected.
At the same moment, every light inside the Mercer house went out.
The gate locked automatically.
Security alarms began sounding across the property.
Miles called Ethan.
His voice was almost lost beneath static.
“Someone opened the STARLIGHT file again.”
“That’s impossible. Sophie is here.”
“They didn’t use Sophie’s voice.”
“Whose voice did they use?”
Miles became silent.
Then he answered.
“Claire’s.”
Ethan looked toward the dark house.
A single light appeared behind the kitchen window.
Someone was standing inside.
The figure lifted a phone.
Ethan’s device received a new video.
Claire appeared on the screen, sitting in the lakeside cabin with baby Sophie in her arms.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Ethan, if Sophie remembers Samuel, then Vanessa has already found the second child.”
The video ended.
Sophie gripped Ethan’s hand.
May you like
“Daddy,” she whispered, staring at the illuminated kitchen window.
“There’s a little girl inside our house.”
