Chapter 12 - the confession she heard

Ethan ran into the corridor.
Emergency lights flickered along the walls.
“Sophie!”
No answer.
Rachel emerged from the secure conference room.
“She was right beside me.”
“Where is Mrs. Bell?”
“Looking for her.”
Miles spoke through Ethan’s earpiece.
“The west stairwell opened thirty seconds ago.”
Ethan reached it and found Sophie’s yellow hair ribbon on the floor.
The door led to the underground garage.
Detective Ortiz and two officers followed him.
A vehicle started below.
Ethan descended the stairs three at a time.
Vanessa’s black sedan was already moving toward the exit.
Sophie sat in the rear seat.
Vanessa was driving.
Ortiz raised her weapon but could not fire with the child inside.
The garage gate opened remotely.
Vanessa escaped.
Ethan stood in the exhaust-filled air, unable to move.
His phone rang.
Vanessa.
He answered.
“Put Sophie on the phone.”
“She is safe.”
“If you touch her”
“You had your chance to believe her.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“What do you want?”
“The foundation authorization.”
“You already have the ledger.”
“I have a copy. The original is still protected.”
“Where are you taking her?”
“Home.”
The call ended.
Vanessa took Sophie back to the Mercer house because the foundation authorization required Ethan’s physical security token, which remained inside his private office.
Julian had calculated that Ethan would follow.
Police vehicles surrounded the neighborhood but remained beyond the garden wall. Vanessa had threatened to flee with Sophie if she saw officers near the house.
Ethan entered alone.
The front door stood open.
A trail of Sophie’s yellow ribbons led toward the kitchen.
He found her standing at the sink, crying and holding a white plate.
Vanessa sat behind her in the black evening dress, calmly drinking wine.
The scene was deliberately familiar.
Vanessa wanted Sophie frightened and Ethan emotionally unstable.
“Close the door,” she said.
Ethan obeyed.
“Let Sophie come to me.”
“After you authorize the transfer.”
“She has nothing to do with this.”
“She has everything to do with it.”
Sophie dropped the plate into the sink.
The sound echoed through the kitchen.
She turned toward Vanessa.
“You’re lying!” she cried. “You hurt me every day!”
Vanessa slowly lowered her glass.
“Your father will never believe you.”
Ethan stepped from the dark hallway.
“She isn’t the one I stopped believing.”
Vanessa froze.
Ethan raised his phone.
“I know about Sophie. And I know about your first husband.”
The glass slipped from Vanessa’s hand and shattered against the floor.
Ethan played the recording recovered from Box B-19.
Vanessa’s voice filled the kitchen.
Children are easier. They believe pain is their fault.
For one brief second, Vanessa looked ashamed.
Then the expression vanished.
“You do not understand what Claire did.”
“She protected our daughter.”
“She used Sophie as a lock.”
“To keep you away from the money.”
“To keep everyone away.”
Ethan moved closer to Sophie.
“Come to me.”
Vanessa stepped between them.
“Authorize the transfer.”
“No.”
“You think the police outside can protect her forever?”
“No.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Then be reasonable.”
“I think the evidence inside this house can protect her.”
Her smile disappeared.
Ethan held up his phone.
The kitchen camera feed was being transmitted directly to Detective Ortiz.
Vanessa lunged toward him.
He stepped back.
The recording continued with a newly recovered section.
A male voice spoke.
“Vanessa, the child found the file. You need to finish what we started before Ethan discovers what happened to Adrian.”
Vanessa stopped.
Ethan’s voice became quiet.
“Where is he?”
“You found the ledger. Find him yourself.”
“What did you do to Claire?”
“I warned her.”
“What did Julian do?”
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“He followed orders.”
“Whose orders?”
She laughed.
“You still think Julian is the important one.”
The lights went out.
Vanessa ran toward the side door.
Ethan pulled Sophie against him.
The door opened.
A car engine roared beyond the wall.
Emergency lights came on.
Vanessa was gone.
Ethan looked at Sophie.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“Someone was outside.”
“Who?”
“The man from the picture.”
“Julian?”
“No.”
She gripped his jacket.
“The other man.”
Ethan’s phone continued playing the recovered recording.
A second voice entered the call.
“Do not let Vanessa leave the house. If she reaches Adrian first, none of you are safe.”
Ethan recognized the voice.
Daniel Price.
Detective Ortiz entered through the front door with officers behind her.
“We found a tunnel beneath the service cupboard,” she said.
Ethan looked toward the stairs.
“A tunnel?”
“It leads to the property next door.”
“That house has been empty for two years.”
“Not empty.”
Ortiz handed him a tablet.
A hidden room had been found beneath the neighboring garage.
Medical equipment stood beside a narrow bed.
The bed was empty.
On the wall, someone had written a message in blue ink.
SHE HEARD THE CONFESSION.
Ethan looked at Sophie.
“What did you hear?”
She pressed her face against his shoulder.
“Vanessa talking to the sleeping man.”
May you like
“What did she say?”
Sophie whispered, “She said Mommy’s car didn’t crash by accident.”
