Chapter 2 - Before the Gifts Broke

Three weeks before Christmas, Nora had believed the greatest threat to the holiday was Jessica's talent for turning every family dinner into a competition.

Jessica arrived at Eleanor's house with expensive wine, a designer coat, and a smile that vanished whenever no one was watching. She had lost her job six months earlier, though she still spoke as if she were choosing between executive offers. She complained that Eleanor's house was too large for one old woman and suggested selling it before taxes became inconvenient.

Nora had once admired Garrett's ability to remain calm during conflict. Over time she realized calm could be courage, but it could also be avoidance dressed in a pleasant voice. Jessica knew how to use that weakness. She would push until someone objected, then accuse the objector of ruining the evening.

Eleanor refused.

The house had belonged to Thomas's parents. Every doorway carried a family measurement, a pencil mark, or an old repair made by someone who was no longer alive. Nora understood why Eleanor protected it. Jessica saw only its market value.

Garrett tried to smooth the conversation by changing the subject to Christmas morning. He said Nora and the children would stay for the entire week. Jessica objected immediately. She said children made noise, broke antiques, and expected adults to celebrate every ordinary achievement.

Melody had recently won a regional science prize for a water filtration model. Tyler had learned to read short books by himself. Eleanor celebrated both achievements with genuine delight, which seemed to make Jessica angrier.

Nora noticed Jessica studying the family photographs on the mantel. One showed Thomas holding Garrett as a newborn. Another showed Jessica at age seven, standing beside Eleanor in a white dress. Behind that frame was a faded hospital bracelet Nora had never seen before.

When Nora asked about it, Eleanor replaced the photograph too quickly.

Melody treated the old camera as a puzzle rather than a weapon. She cleaned the lens, replaced a corroded cable, and wrote a small program that labeled each recording by time and motion. Thomas would have loved the precision. Nora sometimes wondered whether he had recognized something in Melody that the rest of them were only beginning to see.

That same evening, Melody discovered an old security camera in Thomas's workshop. He had installed several cameras after a burglary years earlier, but the system had been disconnected after his death. Melody asked permission to repair one for her science club project. Eleanor agreed, amused by her seriousness.

Garrett did not.

He said the family did not need cameras watching them. His reaction was stronger than Nora expected. Later, he apologized and blamed work stress, but he asked Melody exactly which camera she planned to activate and whether recordings would be stored online.

Nora remembered the questions after the Christmas video exposed Jessica.

The week before Christmas, strange things began to happen. Eleanor's desk drawers were left open. Thomas's old study smelled faintly of Jessica's perfume. A key disappeared from the kitchen hook and returned the next morning.

Garrett became secretive with his phone. He stepped outside to answer calls and returned with the tight expression he wore when he was hiding financial trouble.

The days before Christmas filled the house with cinnamon, pine, and unspoken suspicion. Eleanor baked as if recipes could preserve peace. Jessica moved through the rooms as if measuring them. Garrett checked his phone beneath the table. Nora began to understand that secrets announce themselves long before they are named.

Nora asked whether they were in debt.

He said no.

The answer came too quickly.

Melody, meanwhile, finished connecting the upstairs camera to her tablet. She showed Nora how motion alerts appeared and how a recording could be saved automatically. Nora praised her but warned her never to watch private family moments. Melody agreed.

On December twenty-second, the camera recorded Jessica entering Eleanor's room.

Melody did not watch the video immediately. She was building the pink science kit Eleanor had bought her and helping Tyler wrap a wooden train for their grandmother. The alert remained unopened until Christmas afternoon, when Jessica grabbed the tablet from the coffee table and demanded to know why a child needed such an expensive device.

Melody saw the thumbnail over Jessica's shoulder.

She recognized the emerald box.

Instead of confronting her aunt, she saved the recording to a secure folder Thomas had once labeled Winter Archive.

That name meant nothing to Nora then.

After the police discovered the jewelry box missing, Melody opened the folder again. Beneath her new recording were seventeen older files, all dated during the final month of Thomas's life.

The last file showed Thomas sitting alone in his workshop.

He looked into the camera and said, "Eleanor, if you are seeing this, someone has opened the box. Do not trust the person who tells you this is about money."

Then he leaned closer.

"This began the night Garrett was born."

That night, the house settled around them with old pipes, moving branches, and distant traffic. Ordinary sounds had become suspicious, yet Nora refused to let danger claim every quiet moment. She checked the locks, kissed the children, and left one hallway light burning.
