Chapter 11 - The Other Son

The man beside Thomas was Adrian Vale.

Age had narrowed his face, but the resemblance to Garrett was unmistakable. They were not twins. They were the two boys whose identities had been entangled by the clinic, raised under different names, and used as financial instruments by people who saw children as signatures.

The drive north forced Nora and Garrett into the same vehicle for four hours. They spoke only about the children, the road, and police instructions. The absence of personal conversation felt more honest than the false intimacy they had maintained for months.

Adrian lowered the gun when Thomas told him the camera was active.

He had not intended to shoot Thomas. He believed the connection had been compromised and was preparing to destroy the equipment. Thomas explained that Martin Vale had discovered their hiding place and would reach them within hours.

The live connection came from a remote weather station in the northern mountains.

Detective Shaw traced the signal while Thomas spoke.

He said Martin, not Rusk, had inherited the fraud network from his father. Rusk handled accounts, but Martin controlled identities and legal records. Thomas survived the staged car crash because Adrian pulled him from the vehicle. They went into hiding to build a case, but Martin threatened to kill Eleanor and the children if Thomas returned.

Nora demanded to know why Thomas had trusted puzzles instead of police.

Thomas said Martin had sources inside law enforcement and the courts. Every direct attempt failed. The puzzles created fragments no single person could betray.

Nora replied that the fragments had also left his family frightened and divided.

Adrian's voice on the live feed was rougher than Garrett's. Their expressions differed, but certain gestures mirrored each other: the tilt of the head, the way one hand closed when angry. Biology appeared in fragments, never enough to define a life.

Thomas accepted the accusation.

Adrian explained his own disappearance. At nineteen, he learned that Martin had used his identity to open accounts and take loans. When he confronted him, Martin arranged a false overdose and substituted another body. Miriam believed her son dead until Thomas found her years later.

Miriam spent the rest of her life helping them expose the network.

Jessica heard the live conversation from the hospital. When Adrian said Miriam had asked about her every day, Jessica collapsed.

The weather station alarm sounded.

A vehicle approached.

Thomas told Melody to open a file called Christmas Morning. She found coordinates and a list of emergency frequencies. Detective Shaw contacted local authorities, but a snowstorm delayed access.

Garrett said he was going.

At the fire tower, wind screamed through the beams. Nora understood why Martin had chosen the place. A person standing there could feel above the world while being only one broken step from falling.

Nora refused to let him act from guilt. He answered that he was not trying to earn forgiveness. He was going because Thomas had raised him, Adrian had suffered under his name, and his family had paid for his silence.

Nora went with him.

They reached the mountain road with Detective Shaw's team after midnight. The storm erased the horizon. At the weather station, they found broken windows, blood on the floor, and Martin's abandoned vehicle.

Thomas and Adrian were gone.

A trail led toward an old fire tower.

Garrett and Nora climbed through deep snow while officers spread out below. At the tower, Martin held Thomas at gunpoint. Adrian lay injured near the stairs.

Martin demanded the original ledger pages. He believed Melody had encoded them into the tablet.

Nora said the records had already been copied to federal investigators.

Martin smiled. He said copies were useless without Eleanor's key.

Thomas shouted that there was no key.

Martin struck him.

Garrett moved between them. He told Martin that the family trust no longer mattered. Nora had filed emergency documents freezing every asset, and Eleanor had agreed to dissolve the trust.

For the first time, Martin lost control.

He fired.

The bullet struck the railing beside Garrett. Detective Shaw returned fire from below. Martin fell but caught the edge of the platform.

Garrett reached for him.

Martin looked up and whispered, "Ask Thomas who was in the burned car."

Then he released his grip and vanished into the snow.

Nora understood that the family had reached another temporary answer, not peace. Every document solved one question and revealed the shape of another. She wrote the new facts in a notebook, separating what they knew from what they feared, because fear had already written too many decisions for them.
