Chapter 13 - The Man Who Died Twice
Daniel Cross contacted Nora through Melody's tablet.
His message contained no greeting. It displayed a photograph of a locked green door and a sentence: Thomas is still protecting the wrong person.
Nora searched her pregnancy records and found nothing unusual. Every appointment appeared normal. Yet one insurance code repeated beside routine tests. Detective Shaw traced it to Holly House, which had billed the hospital through a subcontractor.
Detective Shaw traced the message to a public library, but Daniel was gone before officers arrived. Security footage showed a man with a limp wearing a courier uniform.
Thomas recognized him.
Daniel had been his closest ally. He was also Martin's half brother.
Years earlier, Daniel discovered the family fraud and tried to expose it. Martin framed him for embezzlement. Thomas helped him disappear, but during the staged crash Daniel vanished with evidence from the trunk. Thomas assumed Martin had killed him.
Daniel now claimed Thomas had lied about the final ledger.
According to him, the forty million dollars did not belong to the Rowan family, the Vale family, or the trust. It belonged to children illegally separated from their parents through Vale House Clinic.
The money was restitution.
Eleanor agreed immediately that it should be returned. Thomas hesitated because the accounts also contained evidence needed to convict the network.
Melody reacted to the document bearing her name with anger rather than fear. She said a secret file did not get to rename her. Nora held her and agreed. Identity could be stolen on paper, but it could not be completed without consent.
Nora saw the old pattern returning. Thomas still believed he alone could decide when others were ready for truth.
Melody solved the green door photograph. The paint pattern matched a small cottage on Eleanor's property, once used by the gardener. The cottage had been locked since Thomas's death.
Inside they found a hidden communications room. Maps covered the walls. A bank of monitors displayed inactive feeds from houses belonging to former Vale House employees.
One monitor remained live.
It showed Daniel Cross sitting in Martin's hospital room.
Daniel leaned toward Martin and asked where the children had been sent.
Martin laughed despite his injuries. He said names were stored in the final compartment.
Detective Shaw alerted hospital security, but the feed went dark.
Martin was found unconscious. Daniel escaped through a service elevator. On Martin's pillow lay a small emerald shaped like a key.
The jewelry box was missing again.
Thomas's silence after the discovery was an answer before he spoke. He had known Melody's records were targeted. He had not known the full reason, but once again he had chosen surveillance over trust.
Jessica had been transferred from detention to give a formal statement that morning. During transport, the vehicle was stopped by officers using forged credentials. Jessica disappeared.
Celia blamed Daniel. Thomas blamed Martin's remaining network. Garrett blamed himself because Jessica had once used an emergency contact number linked to his company.
Nora refused to let blame become a substitute for action.
Melody remembered Jessica's first words during the Christmas confrontation: Your brats do not deserve Christmas. The phrase had sounded like cruelty, but Jessica later claimed Rusk had fed her specific lines designed to trigger family conflict.
Why that phrase?
Tyler answered unexpectedly. He said Aunt Jessica had once told him that Christmas was the day children were chosen.
The family searched Thomas's records for December twenty-fifth.
They found a list of infants transferred from Vale House on Christmas Day over four decades. Each child had been assigned a new surname and a trust account.
At the bottom of the list was Melody Rowan.
Nora stopped breathing.
Melody had been born at a modern city hospital with Nora beside her. There had been no adoption, no clinic fire, no confusion.
Yet the document listed her birth date, blood type, and a second name.
Melody Vale.
Thomas closed his eyes.
Nora asked what he had done.
Before he answered, the front gate alarm sounded.
Jessica stood outside alone, barefoot in the snow, holding the emerald jewelry box.
She looked at Melody and said, "They did not take you at birth. They marked you before you were born."
Melody saved each file in three locations and gave Detective Shaw the access codes. She no longer treated secrecy as clever. A secret held by one person could be stolen; truth shared responsibly could become protection.
