Chapter 15 - The Door Beneath the Snow

The photograph should have been impossible.

Detective Shaw confirmed that the paper and ink were ordinary, but the timestamp embedded in the image file was three days ahead. It could have been manipulated. Thomas, held in federal custody, denied sending it. Daniel Cross remained missing.

The underground room was warm despite the winter above it. That disturbed Nora most. Someone had maintained the generator, decorated the tree, and wrapped the gifts recently. The station was not an archive. It was active.

The green door in the photograph did not match the gardener's cottage. Melody noticed frost along its lower edge and a reflection of mountains in the metal handle.

Adrian recognized the location.

It was an underground records station built beneath the original Vale House winter garden. Miriam had searched for it for years. She believed the clinic stored unaltered birth records there before moving children through private adoptions.

The entrance had supposedly collapsed.

Snow began falling the night the family returned to the winter garden.

Nora took Melody only as far as the secured command post. She refused to let another adult plan depend on her daughter entering danger. Melody assisted from the tablet while officers, Adrian, Celia, and Detective Shaw searched the ruins.

Garrett remained with Tyler and Eleanor. He did not protest. He had finally learned that helping sometimes meant accepting the boundary someone else set.

Beneath the garden floor, officers found an iron hatch concealed under frozen soil. The emerald stone from the jewelry box fit a narrow slot in the lock.

The door opened.

A staircase descended into darkness.

The station below contained rows of metal drawers, film reels, and sealed boxes labeled with dates spanning fifty years. A generator turned on automatically. At the far end of the corridor stood the green door from the photograph.

Behind it, they found a room arranged like a family parlor. A Christmas tree stood in one corner, fresh and decorated. On a table were fifteen wrapped gifts, each bearing a name connected to the Rowan and Vale families.

Each metal drawer bore a number rather than a name. Detective Shaw opened none of them until warrants arrived. The restraint felt unbearable, but Nora had learned what happened when frightened people treated evidence as permission.

One gift was labeled Nora.

Another was labeled Melody.

A third was labeled The Child Who Was Never Recorded.

Detective Shaw ordered everyone not to touch anything.

A monitor flickered on.

Daniel Cross appeared live from an unknown location. He said Martin's network had not begun with money. The trusts were created to hide a program that selected children based on medical traits and placed them in families with influence.

Vale House had been one branch.

There were others.

Daniel claimed Thomas knew more than he admitted. He said the future-dated photograph was not a trick but a warning generated by a scheduled system. If they were watching it, someone had already activated the next phase.

Nora asked where Jessica fit.

Daniel answered that Jessica was not chosen. She was the child who disrupted the design, which was why Martin spent years turning her pain against the family.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

At Eleanor's house, Garrett moved Tyler behind him before approaching the window. Eleanor held the repaired train engine like a small hammer. The figure in the living room did not threaten them. He simply stood beneath the place where the Christmas tree had been and waited.

"Nora, open your gift."

Detective Shaw refused.

The gift opened by itself.

Inside was a hospital bracelet bearing Nora's name and a date one year before her recorded birth.

Eleanor whispered that the handwriting belonged to Nora's mother.

A second monitor activated. It showed Thomas in his holding cell, asleep beneath a blanket.

A shadow entered his room.

The feed cut to black.

At the command post, Melody's tablet displayed a new Winter Archive file. Its title was not in Thomas's handwriting.

Christmas Two.

The file contained a map with red points across the country. One point blinked beneath Nora's new house. Another blinked beneath the school Tyler would attend in the fall.

The final point was moving.

It traveled along the highway toward Eleanor's home.

Nora called Garrett.

He answered in a whisper.

Someone was knocking at the front door.

Through the phone, Nora heard Eleanor ask who was there.

A man's voice replied.

It sounded exactly like Thomas.

Garrett moved toward the window and looked outside.

Then he said the words that turned every solved secret into the beginning of something larger.

"Nora, Thomas is standing in our living room."

Nora stared at the monitor showing Thomas's supposedly occupied cell.

Two identical men looked back at the family from two different places.

And the final unopened gift beneath the underground Christmas tree began to ring.

Eleanor began recording her own memories, including the ones that made her look mistaken. She said a family history that protected only pride was another kind of forgery.
