Chapter 7 - The Man the Twins Called Daddy

The handwriting on the wall belonged to Lily, but Naomi Bell insisted the message did not prove the children had left willingly. Traumatized children often used family words for captors, especially when those words had been assigned and rehearsed.

Airport footage showed a man in a paramedic uniform entering the protected suite during the laboratory attack. His face remained hidden beneath a mask. He presented authentic emergency credentials, announced a gas leak, and moved the twins through a service elevator. The escort agents were found sedated in a supply room.

One camera captured Owen looking up at the man and reaching for his hand.

"He recognized him," Mara said.

Adrian watched the clip repeatedly. The man's left leg dragged slightly. Nathan Vale had suffered a crushed knee during the winter crossing in Kandar.

General Rourke admitted that Nathan had survived the burned vehicle. He had been recovered by a covert intelligence unit investigating Meridian's contractors. To protect him, Rourke authorized a false death report and placed him inside a classified witness program.

"Then you lost him," Adrian said.

"He disappeared from protection eleven years ago, two days after his sister vanished. We believed Meridian killed him."

"You believed many convenient things."

Rourke accepted the accusation without defending himself. "Claire did not. She came to me five years ago with evidence that Elena's daughter was alive. She asked for access to Nathan's sealed file. I refused because the program was compromised. A week later, Claire became ill."

"And you said nothing to me."

"I had no proof."

"You had fear. You chose to protect your institution from it."

Rourke's face tightened. "Yes."

It was the first honest answer Adrian had heard from him.

June recovered a partial signal from the paramedic's access badge. It ended near an abandoned military housing complex outside Baltimore. The complex had once sheltered families during base renovations. Meridian Civic Trust purchased it after closure and converted the central building into a youth resilience center.

The center had shut down eighteen months earlier.

Mara planned a covert reconnaissance. Rourke offered special operations support, but she refused to use personnel whose loyalties had not been verified. The team consisted of Mara, Adrian, June, Hayes, and four federal tactical agents.

They entered before dawn.

Inside the main building, walls were painted with cheerful murals. Beneath them, doors had magnetic locks on the outside. Each room contained two beds, a camera, and a speaker hidden in the ceiling.

In the basement they found a theater with a one-way mirror. Children's interviews had been staged there for prospective clients. A row of numbered boxes held personal objects taken from previous residents: shoes, drawings, bracelets, photographs, and letters that had never been mailed.

Box 17 contained Lily's missing hair ribbon and Owen's first teddy bear, newer than the one he now carried.

A sound came from the stage.

Nathan Vale stepped into the light.

He was thinner than Adrian remembered, with gray at his temples and a deep scar across his throat. His left leg dragged exactly as it had in the video. Owen and Lily stood behind him wearing coats over their pajamas.

Adrian raised his weapon but did not aim it.

"Let them come to me."

Nathan shook his head. "Not until you understand who is listening."

He pointed toward the speakers. June disabled the building network, but Nathan said the true system was independent.

"Meridian trained children to carry information without knowing it," he explained. "Songs, drawings, repeated stories. Owen remembers sequences. Lily recognizes faces. Together they hold a section of Elena's ledger. Separately, neither can reconstruct it."

"You abducted them from protection."

"I removed them before Northstar did."

Rourke, listening through Mara's secure channel, demanded clarification.

Nathan laughed bitterly. "There are two Northstars. The general built one cell to hunt Meridian. Meridian copied his call sign and used it to frame him. Every system has a mirror. That is how they survive."

Mara ordered Nathan to surrender.

He looked at Adrian. "Ask Rourke why Claire's toxicology report was sealed under Northstar authority."

Rourke went silent.

Lily broke away and ran to Adrian. Nathan did not stop her. Owen followed more slowly, then turned back.

"Daddy Nathan saved Ana," he said.

"Ana is alive?" Adrian asked.

Nathan nodded. "She became the first child who escaped the white door. Elena hid her. Meridian has searched for her ever since."

A red light began blinking above the stage.

Nathan's expression changed. "They found us."

Explosions struck both entrances. Smoke filled the corridor. Armed figures in unmarked uniforms breached from the roof and basement at the same time.

Nathan pushed a metal pendant into Adrian's hand. "Take the twins through the laundry tunnel. Find Ana. She has the last page."

"Come with us."

"I cannot. They need to see me die again."

He fired at the stage lights, plunging the room into darkness, and ran toward the attackers.

Adrian carried Lily while Hayes guided Owen through a service hatch. Behind them, gunfire thundered. Then the building shook with a second blast.

They emerged in a drainage field as flames consumed the roof.

Owen stared back at the burning center.

"He promised he would find us after the second fire," he said.

Adrian opened the pendant Nathan had given him. Inside was a photograph of a teenage girl with black hair.
