Chapter 11 - Beneath St. Orison

The ruins of St. Orison Children's Hospital occupied six fenced acres outside Richmond. Public records showed the land as contaminated and unsuitable for development. Satellite thermal scans revealed power beneath the eastern foundation.

Mara assembled a small team because a larger force would alert Meridian's remaining insiders. General Rourke provided an unmarked transport and then surrendered his command credentials to an inspector general, acknowledging that his authority could no longer be trusted.

"Bring them back," he told Adrian.

"The children or your reputation?"

Rourke lowered his eyes. "The children. I waited too long to learn the difference."

A drainage tunnel led beneath the demolished hospital. Reeve guided them using memories of corridors he had last seen twelve years earlier. The underground complex remained active. Fresh food sat in a staff kitchen. Monitors displayed hospital and airport feeds. Empty dormitories contained beds labeled with numbers instead of names.

They found the white door at the end of a tiled hall.

It opened into an operating theater surrounded by observation glass. On one wall, hundreds of children's names had been carved into paint. Ana walked along them, whispering each one from memory.

At the center of the room stood a locked pharmacy cabinet. June bypassed the electronic seal. Inside were neutralizing agents organized by implant batch.

L-17 and O-17 were missing.

A speaker clicked on.

Voss's voice filled the theater, though he remained in federal custody miles away. The recording had been triggered by their entry.

"The twins were built as a choice architecture experiment. Protectors reveal themselves when resources are insufficient. Parents choose favorites. Institutions choose valuable witnesses. Soldiers choose missions over children. The final observation requires one dose and two subjects."

Adrian shot the speaker.

Reeve searched the cabinet and found production notes indicating the two formulas could be synthesized from available agents, but only with a batch key stored in the central archive.

The archive door opened only when two biometric stations were activated simultaneously in separate corridors.

Claire's message returned to Adrian: the lock opens when the twins choose different doors.

Meridian had conditioned Owen and Lily to operate the stations. Their drawings had not merely encoded locations. They encoded procedures.

"We are not bringing them here," Adrian said.

June examined the sensors. "We may be able to emulate their biometrics, but we need complete scans. The implant signal corrupted the hospital files."

Ana stepped toward the first station. "Lily was made to resemble my mother because Meridian used a limited family line for the female sequence. My scan might work."

Nathan appeared behind the observation glass.

He was alive, wearing a blood-soaked vest beneath an open coat. The sniper round had struck armor, but he had been wounded by the fall.

"Owen's station is keyed to me," he said through the intercom. "Strategic Witness Line means children selected from people Meridian could not control. Owen is my son."

Adrian stared at him.

Nathan explained that years earlier, while hiding with Elena and Ana, he had a relationship with a Meridian physician who claimed she wanted to escape. She disappeared after giving birth. Meridian took the child and used Nathan's genetic line to create leverage.

"I found Owen when he was three," Nathan said. "I could not remove him without exposing Lily. They had bonded them deliberately. So I stayed close and waited."

"You let them remain with Miranda."

Pain crossed Nathan's face. "Every rescue route I prepared ended with another child taken in their place. I was trying to destroy the network, not save only my son. I told myself that made the delay noble. It did not."

The admission satisfied the archive's voice-recognition prompt, which had been quietly analyzing him. A light turned green at Owen's station.

Ana placed her hand on the other scanner and recited her mother's full name.

Both doors unlocked.

Inside the archive, June found the batch key and transmitted it to Naomi. Reeve guided the synthesis remotely. Surgeons removed Lily's implant first, then Owen's. Both children survived.

The team also found Meridian's master placement ledger, but the central leadership page had been cut out.

A recent entry showed that someone had accessed the archive four hours earlier using Claire Steel's credentials.

Claire had been dead for five years.

Security footage revealed a woman entering the archive.

She wore a surgical mask, but her eyes, posture, and the small habit of touching her wedding ring were unmistakable.

Adrian watched the image until the room seemed to tilt.

The woman looked exactly like Claire.
