Chapter 5 - The House with No Family Photographs

The address Miranda had used on school records led to a narrow brick house outside Arlington. It appeared vacant from the street, but utility data showed regular power use and short bursts of internet activity late at night.

Mara obtained a warrant under a sealed federal case. Adrian accompanied the entry team after promising not to touch evidence or command anyone. She reminded him of that promise twice.

Inside, the house smelled of disinfectant and dust. The living room held furniture arranged like a catalog display. There were no family photographs, toys, mail, or signs of ordinary life. A calendar on the kitchen wall showed only numbers written in blue ink.

17. 4. 12. 17. 8.

In the basement, agents found two child-sized beds bolted to the floor, a locked medicine cabinet, and a row of colored sweaters identical to Lily's yellow cardigan. Hidden cameras were embedded in smoke detectors.

June recovered fragments from a damaged recording system. The videos showed different children entering and leaving over four years. Adults changed. Rooms changed. The instructions did not.

Sit straight.

Smile when the visitor enters.

Use the name you are given.

Do not mention the blue room.

One clip showed Owen at about three years old seated beside a black-haired girl. She sang softly while Miranda adjusted a camera. When the girl refused to stop, Miranda struck the table with a ruler.

The child looked into the lens and said, "My name is Ana Kessler. My mother is alive."

The recording ended.

Mara searched missing-child databases. Ana Kessler had disappeared with her mother, Dr. Sofia Kessler, during a flood evacuation in Missouri three years earlier. Authorities believed both had drowned.

Dr. Kessler had been a geneticist working for a military medical research contractor.

"This is not just illegal adoption," June said. "Meridian selected children linked to people with access, knowledge, or leverage."

A concealed safe behind the basement medicine cabinet held five objects: a silver locket, a military challenge coin, a photograph of Elena Mercer, a child's hospital bracelet labeled Baby Girl Kessler, and an audio recorder.

The recorder contained one surviving file.

Elena Mercer's voice filled the basement.

"If you are hearing this, Meridian has moved faster than I expected. Nathan is alive. He did not betray Colonel Steel in Kandar. He discovered that the evacuation list was created years before the war. The attack was used as cover. The children were chosen for bloodlines, access, and psychological conditioning. Some were placed with powerful families. Others were raised to become obedient couriers because no one searches a frightened child."

A door slammed somewhere upstairs.

The entry team spread through the house. No intruder was found, but the front lock showed fresh damage. Someone had entered while agents were in the basement.

Elena's recording continued.

"They know I copied the ledger. I divided it. One part is hidden with my daughter. The other is with the soldier who still believes Nathan died. He does not know he has it."

Adrian stopped breathing for a moment.

The audio crackled.

"Colonel Steel, if this reaches you, look inside the gift Nathan gave you after the winter crossing. Do not trust anyone who already knows what the gift is."

The file ended.

Mara turned toward him. "What gift?"

Adrian remembered a wooden compass box Nathan had carved during their deployment. It had sat for seventeen years on a shelf in Adrian's home office.

Only three people knew about it: Adrian, Nathan, and Adrian's late wife, Claire.

"We need to go to my house," he said.

Mara did not move. "Elena specifically warned you not to trust anyone who knows. You just told an entire room."

Before Adrian could answer, his phone rang from an unlisted number.

A live video opened.

His home office appeared on the screen. The wooden compass box sat beneath a gloved hand.

The camera turned.

Major Daniel Hayes was tied to Adrian's desk chair, blood running from his temple.

A masked figure stood behind him.

"Bring the twins to your house," a distorted voice said. "Or your loyal major learns what happened to Nathan Vale."

The screen went black.

Mara looked across the basement at Adrian.

Hayes had been with them ten minutes earlier.

No one had seen him leave.
